Let's see:

1. Conservatives want to support a nominee who supported McCain against Bush?

2. The person, Baker, who is pushing Thompson's candidacy is a McCain supporter.

Anyone get a clue?

As I said on another thread, they want to split the Republican and conservative vote, which would be advantageous to McCain getting the Republican nomination.

A Ross Perot play inside the Republican primary.

Surely conservatives will be smarter than ending up splitting the party, to get McCain nominated, with President Hillary as a result.

Did you also hear that Dem Strategist Bob Beckel is also trying to con Republicans to get Thompson in the race by making ludicrous statements, that the Dems are afraid of him.

How gullible are conservatives going to be, really?!

STOP and THINK!!!!!

Anyone who watched the campaign finance hearings in the Senate during which Fred Thompson got completed rolled over by Sentaor John Glen and the dem attorneys knows that the left is NOT afraid of him. Prior to those disappointing hearings, I too thought of Thompson as presidential material.

If its McCain vs Thompson, I'd take Thompson any day.

the real issue is we have a long way to elections and really aren't paying attention to anyone yet.

Nice try on dividing us however.

We will let you know when we make a decision.

Thompson is best buddies with McCain and Baker knows that. I bet you Thompson is going to endorse McCain.

You're a RINO, you know nothing about conservatism.

You supported A.Schwarzy for Governor and we all know how that turned out. Now you're promoting the liberal RudyG for POTUS.

Join the Democrats and complete the cycle. You make a good liberal.

Bush has done a number of things to piss me off that McCain might not have done. In retrospect, both candidates kind of sucked. It's the fact that Baker is endorsing Thompson now that worries me about Thompson.

Oh, thank you, thank you, thank you, for saving us from our gullibility! Whatever would we do without you to help us see things your way clearly?

You mean you are OK with McCain's Terrorist Protection Bill and giving them Constitutional rights of US citizens; curtailing free speech and scuttling the Constitutional opion on the judges by making a pact with the Democrats against the Republican majority?

His lack of "game" in those hearings is for me the most serious drawback to his potential candidacy.

Thompson is one of the few that honored his two terms and out pledge and is not in the Senate.

At least he does what he says.

I have no problems with Thompson whatsoever. But it's going to be tough on Duncan Hunter if Thompson runs.

Thompson won't get in unless he's sure McCain isn't going to make it. Thompson is enough like McCain that if he splits votes, it would be with McCain, not in support of McCain.

On the other hand, McCain is a lot more conservative than Rudy Giuliani, so if we could end up with a McCain-like candidate but without his gang-of-14, Kennedy-butt-kissing, maverickish self-centered media loving personality, it would be a great improvement over the current frontrunner.

Or it might highlight that we have enough choices that we don't need to settle for the most liberal candidate on our side a year before the primaries.

It's not wonder the Rudy boosters will seek to take down Thompson, just as they poo-poohed a poll that showed Brownback was within a few points of Hillary Clinton, because if deflated their "Only Rudy" balloon.

Good list. I note you don't include all the loathed McCain positions that Rudy agrees with him on, like Amnesty.

"Thompson is enough like McCain that if he splits votes, it would be with McCain, not in support of McCain. "

Not necessarily. Here on FR most people oppose McCain, but can hardly wait to jump on the Thompson bandwagon.

They want to make sure the Republicans lose to Hillary in 2008, so they can spend 8 years moaning about how miserable they are.

We Rudy people are not worried about Thompson. I would worry about him if I were a Duncan Hunter person because Thompson will steal any thunder that freepers had for Duncan Hunter. Rudy can deal with Thompson or anyone else. But having Thompson run will screw up Hunter. You don't seem to care about that at all.

That's what I thought when I read this thread. Not satisfied to support their own candidate and open, honest discussion, some folk have to start the bad-mouthing. Tsk, tsk.

No, I'm not. I wasn't OK with so-called campaign finance reform either, which Bush wasn't in favor of but then signed after his old rival pushed for it. But I wasn't OK with "no child left behind" and what Bush did with Medicare either. I'm also wondering whether it's the Democrats or spite that kept Bush from ignoring McCain's advise in Iraq. Given everything that's gone on, it's a wonder that I'm still registered Republican in the first place.
