this should open a nice can of worms :)
Leviticus 11:9-12 says:
9 These shall ye eat of all that are in the waters: whatsoever hath fins and scales in the waters, in the seas, and in the rivers, them shall ye eat.
10 And all that have not fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that move in the waters, and of any living thing which is in the waters, they shall be an abomination unto you:
11 They shall be even an abomination unto you; ye shall not eat of their flesh, but ye shall have their carcases in abomination.
12 Whatsoever hath no fins nor scales in the waters, that shall be an abomination unto you.
Deuteronomy 14:9-10 says:
9 These ye shall eat of all that are in the waters: all that have fins and scales shall ye eat:
10 And whatsoever hath not fins and scales ye may not eat; it is unclean unto you.
Gave up alcohol for Lent, but you're right, giving up FR would be way harder.
B) Now that you mention it, I wonder if "worms" are considered "meat". Hmmmm...
He's thinking Jewish dietary laws, not Lenten practices. Jews traditionally do not eat shellfish because they are scavengers.
I guess that rules out "Buzzard Marsala", too, then.
depends on who you ask. some churches still put the kabash on shellfish, some don't.
those that don't forbid it use this passage:
1Timothy 4:3-5 Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth. For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving: For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.
i think that would also cover your worms :)
I never heard of taking Sunday off until I was an adult. I have heard of taking St. Patrick's day off. I think about giving stuff up each year for lent and then it hits about the same time as my spring allergies. So my focus in Lent is to do some additional prayers, meditations, scripture readings, and corporal works of mercy, etc.
You're not kidding! I have Orthodox and Byzantine relatives as well as Catholic. My grandmother would scoff at our 'fasts' and chide my mother, who was very observant, into a more 'proper' fast. But my father would have none of the 'old' ways. My mother would often try to maintain an Orthodox style fast on her own and encouraged us kids to join her.
I happen to love ocean fish, even fish sticks!, and shellfish and toasted cheese with tomato soup. I should have to give up fish on Fridays! I gave up soda this year.
I remember this well. When my mother found out, was told by a parish priest, in the 80's that is was 'ok' to have meat on Fridays during other parts of the year, she was aghast. Although it's been years since my mother passed away, I still mostly have meat free Fridays, partly habit, partly intent, my sister does this, too.
Where is Lent mentioned in the bible - and why do Catholics observe it?
You have to drink the Martini first.
I gave up sweets, also. Except fruit is allowed. Need more oranges!
Right. There is no way the Church would ever say definitively that anyone is going to Hell for eating meat on Friday.
We might expect our elders to give us hell but that's not the same thing as eternal damnation.
It's not - to focus on what Christ did for all of us.
