Well, the case started with an investigation into the leak, but Libby wasn't accused of that, but of lying under oath. Something he said during his testimony about two years after the fact contradicted his notes contemporary with the event, and the particular detail in question was not particularly significant. So the prosecution's case is that two years after the fact, your recall must be perfect or you are a perjurer.

Thank you for that explanation. But I still don't understand the whole thing.

Did you hear this morning? Bush is "deeply saddened" but it's "too soon" to consider a pardon. "Too soon"???!!! I was actually considering a preemptive pardon during the trial, the only drawback being that it might make it appear that there was some behavior that needed pardoning.
Cheney was a little more on point, but praised Libby's contributions to the country and failed to blast the prosecution for being politically motivated "partisan" hacks and nitpicking.
Dems like to compare this to the Clinton impeachment, which was also procedural in nature, i.e. arising from his statements during another investigation. The glaring difference is in the ease of forgetting having sex with an intern in your office vs. forgetting who told you something two years ago, the "something" having since become common knowledge.

Libby was swift-boated, to turn a phrase.
