"A common perception that immigrants are responsible for much of the nation's crime..."

So common I've never heard it.

A common perception that immigrants are responsible for much of the nation's crime is not supported by evidence, according to a study released Monday by an immigrant rights group.

Over 90% of illegal immigrants surveyed while being held in regional detention centers indicated that they were, in fact, innocent of any wrongdoing.

Guess they never went to San Diego, Los Angeles or any border town. Bunch of fools.

Do they make a distinction between legal and illegal immigrants? I mean illegal immigrants have ALREADY committed a crime by just being here. Immigrants that come here through legal channels want to make a better life for themselves which is the whole reason they're here and would thus want to obey the law.

"Researchers said they did not analyze legal and illegal immigrant populations separately, because the U.S. Census data does not ask whether immigrants are in the country legally or illegally."

The Achilles heel of their approach

oh boy, an anti-fence, pro illegal group releases a 'study' with cooked numbers that supports their stance? Shocking!

How much differece would it change the figures if we seperated illegal immigrants from Legal Immigrants.

My take is the Legals pretty much behave themselves. Also, not all illegals are latinos either.

BS!

The illegals are 4% of the US population yet they make up 27% of all federal prison inmates.

According to me, the first sentence of this article also does not support the headline.

But then, hyperbole is the mother's milk of mindless activism...

Yes, shocking indeed. :-}

I guess I should have known that of the 3 pieces I posted at once, this would get the most hits and replies.

Here's hoping the Texas crowd hit the third one.. sounds like not everyone is happy in Texas as to the status of "immigration".

Yes, you are correct.

ALL ILLEGAL immigrants are criminals but not all criminals are illegal immigrants.

Speaking of illegal aliens (rather than the legal ones) I can accept that they, collectively, don't commit "most" of the nations crime. The main reason why I can accept this is because illegals make up,perhaps, three percent of the total number of people residing here.

OTOH,there's no way that I will *ever* believe that illegals don't commit a portion of this nation's crimes that are way, way,*way* out of proportion to their numbers in this country.

"Violent and property crime rates have dropped 34 percent and 26 percent respectively since 1994."

Typically, politically motivated studies like this are based on selective use of statistics. They search thru all the data trying to find one year in the last 10 that they can use to argue their point. Nevermind that if they'd chosen any other year, it would have refuted their argument.

Thank you. So even though they don't commit the majority of crimes, they commit crimes in a percentage far in excess of what would be considered normal.

Since illegal immigrants compose less than 10% of the population, the fact that the are not responsible for the majority of the crimes proves nothing.
