It reminds me of the rash of drivers in the 1990's that insisted that their cars accelerated when they applied the brakes....the following investigations failed to rule out stupidity.

That happened to me years ago in my 1998 Mountaineer as I was stopped in traffic. The engine started accelerating, and the harder I pressed the brake, the faster the engine accelerated. The brakes kept my SUV from moving, but just barely, and it was counterintuitive to release pressure on the brake to solve the problem. What had happened was that my foot was big enough to span the distance between the accelerator and brake pedals and I was hitting both at the same time. Scared the bejezes out of me. Clearly a design flaw, but not a mechanical one.
