Dad wasn't dad after all, but still owes child support

I'm torn. On one hand, people shouldn't have to pay child support for children that aren't theirs. On the other, I think my priority in such awful circumstances would be to make sure my 3-year-old child couldn't be taken away from me merely because I wasn't genetically related to him. I believe I would be looking to legally bind me to my child, not to legally unbind me from him b/c of mere genetics.

IIRC, the policy of the Los Angeles DA has been that if a fellow
gets a default judgement of paternity, he's finished.
Doesn't matter if he's been deployed overseas, recooping
in the hospital, etc., causing him to fail to respond.
Or even cause him to not know a legal proceeding has been convened
against him.

That's the bitter fruit of a broken socialist system (yes, that's
redundant)...it gets so desparate for $$$ to keep their Ponzi schemes
afloat, they don't care if innocents are forced to pony up money.
Even if a DNA test shows the poor fellow isn't Papa.

Justice is the last thing on their minds.

As long as there is a legal proceeding with appeal processes,
I'll go along with getting dead-beat parents to pony up.

But forcing guys that aren't even parents to pay?
That's not justice.

Insist on DNA testing of your children at birth?

There was a bill in the California legislature that called for mandatory DNA testing at birth. I'm pretty sure it died, but men (and boys, unfortunately) are becoming more aware of the need for it. I've read figures of 6-10% of kids born are not the named father's kids.

DNA testing may well become more routine. I have seen reports that a significant percentage of children born to married women are father by someone other than the husband.

Also, nearly half the children born in America today are to unmarried women and the percentage of deceived men among the unmarried couples is almost certainly very high.

Of course, the best advice remains, as always: Marry a woman of high character.

Where's that story where the divorced father paid child support and found out when the daughter would have turned 18 that she had actually died in 1993 but nobody (not the State of California, not the State of Texas or, God forbid, not the mother) bothered to tell him this while they stole his wages and cashed his checks all those years?

Why does the non-father have to pay? Why does the biological father walk away scott free?

Go after HIM for child support. The law should be rewritten to go after the cheaters, both of them, not the innocent.

If it were me, I'd find a very creative lawyer who'd be willing to test the waters and go after the biological father.

And yes, I believe dna tests should now be standard, and attached to the birth certificate. I hate the idea, but I'd rather have that safeguard than not.
