Man, they must have gotten some serious Emails!

Talk about negative publicity. This is damage control.

Talk about negative publicity.

And well deserved!

Yet, the compromise is eminently fair and redounds to their credit.

I don't know what this is about - why do churches need permission from the NFL to do anything?

"The National Football League has absolutely no objection to churches and others hosting Super Bowl viewing parties as long as they do not charge admission and show the game on a television of the type commonly used at home.
"We are simply following copyright law and have done so with regard to any type of commercial establishment including hotels, theatres, museums, schools, arenas and others.

"This is nothing new. It is a matter of longstanding policy and the law.

"We have no rules that relate to viewing at home on any type of television."

I think the church was charging a fee.

I think the church was charging a fee.

No. The church was showing it free (as part of a fellowship meeting) on a screen larger than, I think, 55 inches, which is not allowed by the NFL unless you have a waiver that is generically given to bars and restaurants. The church had contacted the NFL for permission and been told "NO" in clear and precise terms. Hence, the email backlash and the climbdown.

There was a mention of the dimensions of the TV in the original article. One of the complaints by the NFL was that the church was going to use the wide screen projector to show the game, which violated some rule against broadcast on something greater that 66" in an establishment other than the home.
