I think you stumbled on your way to DU.
Dear Cicero,
"Ronald Reagan ...because he once supported abortion?"
Please document when Mr. Reagan supported abortion, as opposed to when he supported liberalizing California's abortion law to permit legal abortion in cases of rape, incest, and grave health risk to the mother.
Thanks,

I know what you mean, but I just don't see enough people going for him. No doubt you are in the middle of a flame war right now over this (I didn't check).
I am in the NY area, and Rudy definitely cleaned up the city. They said it couldn't be done! But again, I see problems ahead, too.
Please, no Hillary, whatever happens!!!
Hey, if it happens, then you are right!
I am in the NY area, and he did what everyone said COULD NOT be done - clean up NY.
I'm just looking at what I see here, and elsewhere.
I would like a more conservative candidate myself, but we could do much worse than Rudy.
Sometimes it seems to me that no one on FR even thinks about this!!!
However, it is like a great, profound political truth in the US political arena!!!
That's what I was referring to. Rape and incest are not the baby's fault, and the health exception has always been widely abused by abortionists.
I was not knocking Reagan, just observing that he evidently would not have passed the litmus test of this oganization.
Dan, doesn't this sound oddly familiar? A partisan logic that got us in bed with a European liberal in California?
Now that der Steuereintreiber is loose in the wild, those same blind partisans are running for cover.
I don't know about Dan, but it sure has a familiar ringing in my ears!!! Yeck!!! Wretch!!! It makes me create CO2 with which I warm Algore's differential!!!
Dear Cicero,
"That's what I was referring to. Rape and incest are not the baby's fault, and the health exception has always been widely abused by abortionists."
I agree with you. Unfortunately, at the time of the 1967 legislation, folks generally didn't realize that the "health" exception would be abused. The abuse of that exception moved Mr. Reagan to denounce his own legislation within a year of passing it.
Nonetheless, Mr. Reagan NEVER supported abortion generally. His views in 1967 then were about where most "pro-lifers" are now. Although I'm an "extremist" - I don't believe abortion should be legal in any circumstance - most folks who are pro-life - that is who would generally ban abortion - would still provide exceptions to the general rule for cases or rape, incest, and life (folks learned about using the word "health") of the mother.
It is a falsehood that Mr. Reagan once supported abortion, oft repeated here at Free Republic, but devoid of truth.
It is a falsehood that has been used repeatedly to justify the candidacies of pro-aborts who have managed to purloin "Rs" to attach to their backs.
