Revolting. Tolerant Canadian government officials will permit this abuse and violence against a woman and her daughters because he, a Muslim appealing under Sharia, says he's a normally peaceful man? It's painful to read. She and her girls are 'honor' killings just waiting to happen - here or there - while the law stands by out of feigned tolerance.

Regardless of the sentence, it would seem the poor woman is doomed. A real Catch-22, even her family in Lebanon, should they make it there, won't be able to help her. A Sharia divorce is her only hope, dim as that is. I'd be curious to see if the press keeps up the coverage to see if the divorce is granted, regardless of the Canadian law sentencing. I know most media don't generally follow divorce cases, except sometimes where such aggravated abuse has occurred. And this would fit that bill. That will be the real determinant of justice. I won't hold my breath. Yeah, it surely does give us, those of us who bother to look, an eyeful into their idea of 'justice' and the mindset behind it. Chilling.

The man, whose name cannot be published to protect his child's identity, attacked his wife last February in their Snowdon apartment before stabbing the 15-month-old girl in the stomach.

It occurs to me that the only person who poses any danger to the child already knows her identity. It might be safer for her and pretty much everybody else if we knew his.

I wonder if it would be her only hope if she remained in Canada and sought a civil divorce. Of course, if she is determined to live by sharia, she most likely will die by sharia. Yet here in the West, religious and civil marriage and divorce rules co-exist fine. A religion can determine whether it will grant a remarriage or recognize a divorce, but it can't enforce its dictates by civil authorities. Proponents of sharia want to be different. They want to make the rules and then call upon civil authorities to enforce them. Maybe this will give Canada a wake-up call about incursions of sharia councils in Canadian territory. Meanwhile, I would urge the lady to get civilly divorced, obtain a protective order against the ex, and get on with her life in Canada or some other Western nation that recognizes Canadian law. Lebanon isn't too friendly a home anyway, let the family come over here to visit her and the kid.
