I can't cite a source but I remember hearing about this sometime earlier in the year. I don't know why people would be surprised by the news that Al Quaeda wants to attack the continetal US, though.

The plan also came only months after Ayman al-Zawahiri, al Qaeda's No. 2, had requested that Zarqawi attempt an attack inside the United States. If you all remember, from the intercepted letter from Zawahiri to AMZ, he asked AMZ to try and strike the U.S. mainland.
Without elaborating, it's been a side project of his (and his successor) for some time, and there have been some indications on the matter.
"Anyone willing to go to Iraq to fight American troops is probably willing to try to come to the United States," Clarke said.
Another excellent point. In fact, it would be much easier to recruit people for suicide attacks against the United States than against Iraqi targets. Word has gotten out that many of the shaheed who travelled to Iraq were used to blow up Shia markets and mosques, not American convoys, like they were promised. One of the major detriments to recruitment, in fact. If they had a clear passage open to the U.S., and a way to exploit it, they'd have a much easier time recruiting "drivers" and suicide operatives.
It's a lot more complicated than people realize, to move suicide bombers. Even getting them to Iraq is tricky. Getting them to the U.S. is several times harder. Still, it's not impossible by any means. They just need a path to use, 20 bodies wide.

Don't fret Steel Wolf, you and your war critics can never have bad news, for all the bad news is good news for you!
And the President will never "look good" again, of that you can be assured.
Don't worry, be happy!

Lt. Gen. Michael D. Maples, head of the Defense Intelligence Agency, recently testified that documents captured by coalition forces during a raid of a safe house believed to house Iraqi members of al Qaeda six months ago "revealed [AQI] was planning terrorist operations in the U.S."
Unless it was closed door testimony, ABC wasn't exactly letting the cat out of the bag.

Now that they have Democrats controlling Congress, it would be foolish of the terrorists to attack in the US, and so I don't know why some have their underwear in knots over this - if they keep doing what they are doing in Iraq, over time they wear down public opinion/morale/etc. here in the US, and the chances of a Democratic Congress forcing us to scale the war back increase.
If they are attack here, they suffer a huge setback, because they automatically cause the Democrats to support whatever the sitting US President decides to do. The Democrats would basically give the President a blank check, which is the last thing the terrorists want.
As long as the US is in Iraq, the terrorists can't accomplish what they want - the so-called caliphate, etc. It's in their best interest to confine the war to the Middle East and just wear us down, instead of an attack in the US that would strengthen our resolve.

I don't see why this is any more threatening than any other terror plots. Unless the media want to use it to alert colleges and universities to pay attention. /s

In August, the FBI and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement alerted intelligence agencies and state and local law enforcement about 11 Egyptian students who had failed to report to their classes at Montana State University.Something seems kind of fishy about this story.
MSU Fall semester didn't begin until September in 2006 [like many schools]. Yet, the alert concerning the "students" came in August, one month before classes even began?
Here's a link to MSU 2006 Fall schedule clearly showing classes didn't begin until September:
