Well, any nonexistent disease "could" ravage the US
I spent weeks in 2002-03 on smallpox containment planning, and believe me, the government is totally and fundamentally unprepared to deal with any disaster of that magnitude. The degree of magical thinking that exists among officials charged with responsibility for the public health is absolutely beyond belief.
That having been said, it's a mistake to focus on H5N1 "bird" flu as a major public health threat, which it isn't.

Bird flu killed 80 people last year, worldwide. Meanwhile, how many right here in the USA died of the plain ol' run of the mill flu?

Currently, I have some migrating birds taking a rest stop on my lot and the one next door. This is the third day that it has sounded like the soundtrack to The Birds outside my door.

All I can say--My wife, a physician, has attended several conferences on this topic. She is not one to exaggerate things and in the past has poo-pooed these things--things this could be the real deal. She thinks the major impact will be in poorer Countries--but its a coming!!!</p>
To: blam
Two words from the entire article popped out at me:
major investments
All the hoopla about bird flu, all the dire warnings about consequence and preparedness, all boil down to those two words.

"My wife, a physician, has attended several conferences on this topic. She is not one to exaggerate things and in the past has poo-pooed these things--things this could be the real deal." Have you all made any preparations? If so, what?

Haven't made any preparations---except looked into investing in two Companies that are making Vaccines----Cambridge bioteck firm--Acambis and a Swiss vaccine firm----Cytos Biotechnology. Other preparation will come down the road.(like receiving an early vaccine--etc.)
To: blam
I'm always prepared, bird flu or terrorism, or whatever.
I'll let the experts argue about possibilities, my job is to be personally prepared to take care of myself if the system breaks.
