There are certainly no plans to invade Iran. What were talking about is air attacks against Iranian nuclear sites and/or against targets which may be aiding the insurgants in Iraq.

I sympathize with those who don't want us to do it, but I think there is really no choice. An Iran with nukes or an Iran taking over in Iraq as we withdraw are simply not acceptable options, and the guy in charge there has shown no receptivity whatsoever to diplomatic pressure.

"I believe that these 'leaks' are part of a joint U.S. and Israeli campaign to oust Ahmadinejad, which is imminent." Precisely what I was thinking, the U.S. is just tightening the screws. Does anybody really think Israel would let leak plans about bombing Iran? some people are so gullible.

Won't happen -- the 'Rats in Congress and the media won't allow it. But it's probably a good idea to 'mull' in order to keep the Islamnazis worried.

If the American public had the guts to stick it out in Iraq for the long term, this would probably not be necessary, as we would have forces right on Iran's doorstep indefinitely to keep them in check. However, the American public no longer has such guts, and therefore we need to deal with Iran soon.

I agree. This isn't rocket science.
We've got a country developing nukes and openly stating their intention to destroy a critical ally (Israel).

Maybe Bush and the Israelis are trying to provoke Iran to strike first, thus providing cover for any decision to attack.

Probably just a squeeze on Ahmadinejad. If not, this is an attack that had better be over in 12 hours or less - before the squawkers get out of bed. GWB will have zero support for any kind of extended bombing campaign.

I know. It's by no means an easy call to make. It's just unacceptable to allow Iran to continue nuclear development and strengthen its power in Iraq.
Air strikes on Iran will mean missile strikes on Israel and on Gulf and US targets all over the region, there will be financial chaos and the potential for this is spiral into a regional war very quickly is all too real..but the alternative, a nuclear Iran, is always worse.
Whatever happens, it's going to be nasty & not something to relish.
To: joebuck
They've already shot down a drone recently. They are going to be extremely nervous with two carrier groups in the region. A training exercise in the Gulf could be viewed by nervous Iranian local commanders as an impending attack.
It's easy to see how it could get out of control...

Defensive operations will ensue, and you cannot remain immobile and win.

I think someone is just trying to stir things up.
There's no way, as long as we're in Iraq, we'll be taking on another country unless the U.S. is in serious, immediate danger, and I don't see that.
Could we be making preparations just in case? We'd better be!

To: dinoparty
Obviously this was all planned out prior to our invading Iraq...
