A little science, a lot of speculation, and more than a little mythopoeic thought go to make up Evolutionism. In any case, the gap between man and any surviving relatives is vast, as is evident by the fact that we haven't heard from them. Whether man differs from the brutes by degree or by kind, the degree of difference is as sharp as that between Earth and that ice planet they found orbiting a dwarf star. I think it really boils down to a moral question. If man is just an animal, then what he does matters not, and his disappearence matters no more than the disappearance of the dinosaurs..or the Dodo.
