Surely even French jews can figure out which side to be on in this contest. If I were a French jew, I would oppose the side sucking up to the people who want to exterminate me. Survival is more important than sticking to one's Socialist principles.

That does not seem to be as important as being politically correct. History unfortunately repeats itself.

With the French presidential election three months away, conservative candidate Nicolas Sarkozy is gaining strength in the Jewish community. Isn't that three years away rather than three months? Chiraq was reelected to a seven year term in May 2002.

Win or lose, Sarkozy could really shake things up in France. He openly endorses a "clean break" with stultifying and regressive (de)Gaullist conservatism (a la Chirac and Villepin) proposing instead a dynamic, reformist and pro-growth conservatism of the type more familiar here in America.

I can't imagine there are too many French Jews left.

French Jews now have to choose between Socialism and survival. For some, it's a difficult choice

A perspicuous observation. And one that might be extended to the French people as a whole.

No.
The constitution was amended to reduce the presidential term to 5 years from the original 7. Chirac was elected in 2002, and his term expires this year, 2007.

With the growing Islamist population in France, NO French president will stick his neck out to defend the Jews. I hope they get out while they can.

Let's hope the trend continues for Sarkozy. Does anyone remember the name of that little "jean d'arc" who has become so popular? Is she helping Sarkozy at all?

How are things going with that race?

The same is true with U.S. Jews; more than 85% voted Democratic in the recent elections. Most of the leadership of the national and state ACLU organizations and many of the civil rights lawyers defending Islamic terrorists are Jewish. It's almost like a death wish.

It will be very close.
If Chirac decides to try and run as an independent, it will wreck it for Sarkozy.
