said most of the Guard troops are not allowed to carry loaded weapons, I believe these troops were indeed carrying loaded M-16s. Rules of Engagement are such that they were not authorized to use their weapons under these circumstances.

The OBL would scream "Posse Comitatus" but I fail to see how the posse comitatus act is supposed to prevent the NATIONal GUARD from GUARDing the NATION.

No, they weren't overrun, they had to RETREAT because guys with M-16s were approaching them. We are being invaded. We can give guys in Iraq guns, but no guns for those who are defending American territory. Martinez is a master of confusion. Here's what your article says:
'The armed confrontation occurred around 11 p.m. Wednesday near Sasabe , about a quarter-mile north of the border. A team of four or five Guard troops, armed with M-16s , were watching for border crossers at an observation post when they spotted four men carrying what appeared to be rifles, Martinez said.
As the men came closer, the Guard troops left their post and called for the Border Patrol.
"In order to not be detected, they moved to a safer location," Martinez said. "That's exactly what we want them to do.
"They're armed for their protection. Once they are afraid for their lives, they can defend themselves.
"That was not the case." '

Several Border Patrol agents in the area told The Washington Times yesterday the armed men might have been trying to find out what the Guard troops would do if they were confronted by drug or alien smugglers... "I guess they got their answer," said one veteran agent. "When in doubt, the troops will run." Nice.
Its's official. The Minutemen are a more effective armed force along our border than the United States Army!
My only remaining question is, do we have an "exit strategy" to redeploy from America?

Send some Delta operators down there with open rules of engagement and see how many more times these druggies come across.

I would like to see Dick Cheney run for POTUS in 2008, Condi Rice run for U.S. Senate in California and a return to conservative values and policies. You're kidding, right?
Condi Rice espouses freedom of choice for women, aka abortion.

Dick Cheney espouses homosexuality as an alternative lifestyle (in order to appease his lesbian daughter).
These are not conservative people. We need conservatives, but these ain't it!

The rules of engagement for this should be very simple. Carry loaded weapons but don't fire unless you are being threatened by armed intruders. Identify yourself and warn them that unless they retreat into Mexico immediately you will open fire. And then do it. Shoot, shovel, let the dips sort it out.

Oh yeah, and be sure to record video and audio of the engagement so no one can doubt what really happened.

This is a travesty and so rediculously shameful and, in terms of the adminstrative, management, and ROE decisions that led to it, to be absolute dereliction of duty for whomever imposed such a policy on our National Guard as they were placed on that dangerous border. It will do nothing but encourage the illegal criminal element crossing our borders.

I don't think so.
Condi Rice? I don't think so either.

Mexico: Production in Mexicos largest oil field peaked in 2004 and is slated to decline at about
14 percent per year. Mexico has discovered many other deep water oil fields that could offset the declining production in older fields, but does not have the funding or the expertise to develop them. All Mexican oil and gas resources were nationalized in 1938 and foreign ownership is prohibited by the Mexican constitution.
Last March, the CEO of Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex) Luis Ramirez Corzo stated that the company needs to invest $20 billion annually for the next 20 years to maintain production. However, Pemex has invested only about half that over the past 5 years. Amazingly, as private oil companies around the world raked in record profits last year, Pemex
lost $3.75 billion. Why? The chief reason is that the Mexican government loots the company to finance itself. Only a state-owned oil company can lose money when oil prices have been this high.

I don't know about Cheney but I surely would never vote for C. Rice....she is not a Conservative by any stretch of imaginations, do your homework on her; she is a "student" of the USSR, possibly involved with a Chinese spy cover-up @ Stanford, had a BJC trip exchange visit to the KGB (not mentioned often), was mentored by M. Albright's father, check it out, she is bad news, not to be trusted, especially after her dismal performance @ State.
Ever wonder about the statement by GW re Putin, "looked in his eyes and saw a man I can trust", he just thought he was looking at Rice!!!IMO.

bottom line: the NG are UNARMED! A FReeper Guardsman reports on another thread that they were *not* unarmed, although they only had two magazines of ammunition, when he was on a similar assignment in New Mexico.

Arming them might be the first order of business. They were armed, but chose to retreat, since they aren't supposed to "confront" any invaders. It's the ROE that's a problem, not the equipment.
