When I first heard of Ellison using Jefferson's copy, I knew that maroon didn't know his US history.

Good Post!
Technical point, he is using a translation of the Koran(spellings according to preference). The true Koran is, has been, and will continue to be in Arabic.
So much for Muslim wannabes.

Ellison To Use Quran Suggested By Radical Muslim Group

Ellison claims he got the idea of using a Quran owned by Thomas Jefferson for his swearing in from an anonymous person.

In fact the idea for the PR stunt was suggested to him by the Muslim American Society, a radical group founded by the Muslim Brotherhood. The MAS want to impose Sharia law on the United States...

The name rang a bell, I think I've read some other articles by him but not for a while. Did you used to post some of his pieces?

When you are about to do something very historic...and invoke the name of Lincoln or Jefferson...you want to be sure of what you are doing. In this case...Ellison was likely told by some college professor in Minnisota of the Jefferson item and thought this would look good in the eyes of his public. You must remember...he is a trained lawyer...he is a manipulator of public media (he spent 8 years running a little show on a public radio station there in Minnisota...gaining his audience)...and he likely has no indepth knowledge of US history (most US Muslims don't). And just so we all remember this....he is a Sunni Muslim.

The short answer is, IMHO, some people simply look for things to make issue of and start a fight over....

SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL ON ISLAM

"How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy - which! is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog - there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. The effects are apparent in many countries. Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live.

A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement; the next of its dignity and sanctity . The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property, either as a child, a wife, or a concubine, must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men.

Individual Moslems may show splendid qualities, but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists i! n the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith. It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science - the science against which it had vainly struggled - the civilization of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilization of ancient Rome."

Sir Winston Churchill

Died: 24 January 1965

Great history lesson. Assuming its all factual (and it all makes sense to me) what I can't understand is why we sit here in FReeper land reading this. Why wasn't our side educating the people as to why Jefferson had this Quran? Cowardice - that's the reason - plain and simple.

This ties in to an earlier RevWar/Colonial History/General Washington List ping out, Thomas Jefferson, Ben Franklin, John Adams and James Madison: Young America’s Fight with Islamism, almost a Paul Harvey ending, eh?

If Ellison lurked, he might have a different read on Jefferson. Was Ellison trying to poke us in the eye for the Barbary Wars or did he outfox himself?

The Quran Ellison used was no ordinary book. It once belonged to Thomas Jefferson. . .[who] . . . needed to know everything possible about Muslims because he was about to advocate war against the Islamic "Barbary" states of Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Tripoli [to respond to their declaration of war against us and to halt their piracy and killing and enslavement of U.S. citizens].

And a big THANK YOU to the new Congressman for reminding us Muslim extremists have done it to us before! Now if someone would just tell his fellow Rats.

Good points all. If this story gets any legs at all, which I doubt, he might regret this little show he put on. I guess we can only hope.

First of all, thank you for your service to our country, I appreciate it!

I think for someone like this man to find answers in Islam, he would have an innate hatred of America. It's easier for me to understand why someone in prison might be converted, someone with an inner rage against the system - but I don't trust someone who has enjoyed the opportunities this country offers and then puts their faith in Islam.

Such a man cannot have good intentions.

Given Arab Muslims' identification with the slave trade (which still continues!), I can't figure out why any thinking Black individual would convert...

Sir Winston, if he were alive today, would probably reassess his opinion of Europe's ability to survive in he face of Islamism. They have abandoned the Christian religion and science's ability to protect them is worthless without the will to resist.
