"Watching Viet Nam and U.S. getting along is not a pleasant experience for China, I suspect."

China has never gotten along with 'Nam but Nam has gotten along with Russia. The U.S. is the nemesis of both... and yet Russia certainly would not cry if China dropped out of the #2 spot.

Now did this happen partly for us, or for us and Russia? Or was it done with all three (Russia, China, U.S.) in agreement?

Wheels within wheels on this one or what?

For the next 10 years Vietnam will be the place to be in Asia.

Not as long as Charlie is still running the show over there.

charlie is getting old and his subjects are mostly my age...and they are getting sick of charlie. Most want to know the taste of Starbucks before they die.

And you also have to wonder if Vietnam is having second thoughts about going commie.

They've been having second thoughts about that for over thirty years. Too bad they weren't allowed to express them.

You'd think that after thirty years of anti-American propaganda from their government, the Vietnamese would hate the U.S. But the opposite is true.

To the younger generation of Vietnamese, the war is not even a memory. They see freedom, democracy, and capitalism as the way to the future.

If anything, they are disappointed that the U.S. didn't stay and defend them. Thirty years of communism has been a high price to pay for so-called "liberation."

Plus a lot of the local Vietnamese population have direct family living in the US and Australia.... and they see stuff like their 25 year old cousins driving a rice rocket around being cool and they want it too...

Vietnamese are probably one of the most direct of all Asian cultures. They will tell you, and especially their extended family what they are thinking.

Being in a couple of free countries for 30 years and having major populations there is having an impact I believe. Unintended, but an impact none the less.

Re #17

Cho Gab-je, a conservative activist and the former president of 'Monthly Chosun', a conservative monthly political magazine, claims that the magazine's articles on Kim Jong-il's international money network served as a basis for drawing up U.S. financial sanction to N. Korea. The magazine featured, over a decade, extensive articles on Kim's finances.

I would not be surprised if his claim actually turned out to be true.
