The opinion seems to be that arming the police would just "up the anti".
The statistics regarding violent crime, including deaths, involving guns supports this.
Yes - and it also needs to be borne in mind that there are large parts of the UK where a confrontation between police and armed criminals is still a very rare event (contrary to the impression given by this article). There are gun crime hotspots like Nottingham and Manchester where there is a real problem, but it's far from clear that a change to routine arming would be justified in the country as a whole.

I think there must've been a time in american history when american cops also didn't carry guns. Otherwise where would the look of the "keystone cops" come from? Tall hats, whistles, and nightsticks.
