LOL. If that statement wasn't so ludicrous I would respond. As it is it only deserves contempt.

Wow the prophecies the realists warned about are coming to roost quite a bit sooner than even I would have imagined.

Pinging some of the newly minted "realists".

Shep is reporting on Fox that the three-way talks with King Abdullah, Maliki and President Bush are cancelled.

Not cancelled, postponed until tomorrow.

Maliki has just lost 5 cabinet members, he needs to make sure his government doesn't fall apart tonight.

they were not ready for democracy, that's the sad conclusion. mind you, this doesn't mean they are not CAPABLE of democracy - they simply were not ready for it, were not ready to build the institutions required to sustain it.

Hmmmm....seems I remember realists saying that over three years ago....yep it was the realists. Because it sure as hell wasn't the flagwaving hoo-rah party faithful. Contrary to Woodrow Wilson, Bush, the PNAC, and Republicans, democracy can not be spread in such a fashion. It comes through trade and the free exchange of ideas. Look at parts of Southeast Asia. Through capitalistic ventures, even Vietnam is coming about in ways. Not by long ago domino effect wars but by trade.

Of course, 'conservatives' won't learn. They'll try the same nonsense in another nation in the next generation. And the same result will be achieved. Thankfully however, this fiasco should be about over. Rantings about Iran or Syria are just that. Rantings. Nothing will be done but talks. Unfortunately destabilization of Iraq, for whatever the lame excuse was, and the establishment of the purple finger regime will bring about closer ties with Iraq and Iran. Not sure I see a Persian superstate in the Middle East but they will be closer....On the brightside the Iraq/Iran war is completely over. On the not so brightside it appears it brought two former enemies together

neorealists?

Hardly. Look back for about 2 years. We were called trolls, BushHaters, Terrorist lovers, and basically everything un-American. Now the Maliki government is a failure, and Mookie (an Iranian Hezbullah stooge) is ascending to power. This is exactly what the realists pointed out years ago. Nothing "neo" about it. Just that those who blindly screamed "stay the course" have a new phrase. Go figure.

neo & paleo-realists = 'ditch Israel'

Fine. See what Israel does when she feels abandoned and cornered.

Yes, as I said, American's no longer want to fight Mookie's goons, Saddams goons, or terrorists in Iraq.

It just not good TV.

Losing the Enlightenment

By: VDH

Our current crisis is not yet a catastrophe, but a real loss of confidence of the spirit. The hard-won effort of the Western Enlightenment of some 2,500 years that, along with Judeo-Christian benevolence, is the foundation of our material progress, common decency, and scientific excellence, is at risk in this new millennium.

But our newest foes of Reason are not the enraged Athenian democrats who tried and executed Socrates. And they are not the Christian zealots of the medieval church who persecuted philosophers of heliocentricity. Nor are they Nazis who burned books and turned Western science against its own to murder millions en masse.

No, the culprits are now more often us. In the most affluent, and leisured age in the history of Western civilization--never more powerful in its military reach, never more prosperous in our material bounty--we have become complacent, and then scared of the most recent face of barbarism from the primordial extremists of the Middle East.

What would a beleaguered Socrates, a Galileo, a Descartes, or Locke believe, for example, of the moral paralysis in Europe? Was all their bold and courageous thinking--won at such a great personal cost--to allow their successors a cheap surrender to religious fanaticism and the megaphones of state-sponsored fascism?
