Antibiotics for lice??? I've never heard of it.

We got lice a few years ago after a trip to Disneyland.

We tried the medication, but the lice came back.

We finally read about putting mayonaise (or olive oil) on your hair and wrapping it with plastic wrap, and leave on for at least 8 hours. We did this, and it worked.

It was the funniest thing to see me and my kids with plastic wrapped heads.

I've done the mayo routine, and the vinegar and just about everything you can find on the market. When she gets them, believe me, she gets them.......sheesh.

Apparently there is some type of antibiotic that has an effect on a live infestation, but even if it were to work, it does not solve the problem that if their is just one nit (egg) found in the hair the child is not permitted in school.

Our doctor will not give her drugs for the lice and I am thankful for that, he's even leary of some of the over the counter stuff.....and this is a man who began practicing medicine when kerosene was still one of the normal treatments for headlice.

The school nurse is a dunce in my opinion and she totally despises me, but knows she has to tread very lightly because another formal complaint against her on this issue and she will most likely be looking for another job. I'm currintly in contact with several reknowned public health doctors in my effort to put together a presentation to the school board to change the no-nits policy.

I am working on the ignorance of current public health knowlege that shows the district no nits policy and policy of pushing antibiotics for lice are far more detrimental to the children than the stupid bugs themselves.

Antibiotics for lice? I've never heard such a thing. So what is your position on nits? Our schools will allow one or two nits, and just check for the next few days, but more than that and the kids go home.

The knowlegeable nurses will check and allow one or two to pass, especially when they are more than 1/2 inch from the scalp.

This particular woman has sent home certain children for nits when all she has seen is dandruff. My emphasis is on the word "certain."

According to the American Academy of Pediatricians, the National School Nurse Association, and most of the major schools of public health (such as Harvard and Boston College) live infestation is the only reason to contact parents, once the child has been treated a few nits is no reason to keep them out of school, as long as there are followup checks and treatments. Parents that refuse to follow the rules should be called on it.

One of the things I have learned in my research is that headlice is nearly as over diagnosed as ADD/ADHD by people not trained to diagnose either.

Myself and 2 other parents are just waiting for this woman to send 1 of our children home for nits again. Live infestation we all understand, but she hasn't done that to any of us this school year, it's only been nits. Each one of us has witnessed how she handles the mandatory head checks of the rest of the class when one child is sent home. We've documented how she will lift a stand or 2 of hair on a child and send him/her on their way. But will take her time on another child and pull the child aside and does this in front of the entire class.

Of course then the entire class knows why that child doesn't come back to class.............

My daughter and 2 of her friends are actually afraid to get sick because if they miss school the other kids pick on them for having cooties. All because this woman is totally incapable of being a professional. She screwed up last year and got called on it and has decided to take it out on the kids of the people who called her on it. We will get her, but we are going to have our ducks all in a row. We didn't last year and that is why she is back this year.

You have made the best decisions. May you and your family continue to be blessed. We are not totally against public education. In all actuality, we have invested years into PTA and my wife worked for several years as a "paraprofessional". The children called her the Library Lady. To this day young people run up to her in the grocery store and elsewhere to give a hug and say thanks. Nothing will ever change that.

Boy, am I glad I have a boy. When Mark was in the public school and I got notice of a lice infestation, I just shaved his head as a precaution. None of the rest of us got it, praise the Lord!

Please don't talk to me about shaving heads.......Jax was able to sit on hers when I shaved hers and mine.

There would be no way I would shave my daughters' hair.

It was really bad when we got lice. My poor daughter has sensory problems, and hates to have her hair brushed. She also has lots of thick hair. She had the lice the worst, and it took forever to get nits out of it.

Thank God, we've only gotten them once.

The other thing that I read is that lice do not like hair products. In fact, they like clean hair.

When we went to Disneyland again, I made sure all of us had hair spray on our hair.
