The vagueness of the term stem cell research is one of the biggest problems in the ongoing stem cell debate. Writers, debaters, scientists, public figures and politicians should differentiate between embryonic stem cell research and non-embryonic stem cell research in order to keep the meanings clear. Incredibly true, because most people have no idea of the difference.

A good primer for adult stem cell information.

First, researchers do not yet know which form of stem cellsembryonic or non-embryonicwill offer the most success in treating cancer, Parkinsons, juvenile diabetes, Alzheimers, heart disease or spinal-cord injuries. But so far the score is non-embryonic - 72, embryonic - 0.

"... embryonic stem cells (ESCs), which are derived from embryos that are destroyed in the process, have great potential to produce cancer in humans." Ironic, is it not, that the so-called "non-viable tissue masses" are unsuitable for transplantation principally because they are plenipotential?
They are intended to produce an entire human being, not just some replacement parts.

Not so ~ people who use the terms deceptively know exactly what they mean, and that's generally how the ESC folks use the terms.

However, the mainstream media essentially ignores the existence of adult/umbilical cord stem cells, so the average person who gets their news from the left has no idea that there is anything except embryonic stem cells.

Umbilical cord blood, actually, but otherwise I like your post. And it's not a liver, but liver cells that they've made.
To: wagglebee
The MSM are NOT ignoring the difference. They know the difference. What they want is for the public to accept the idea that some human life is suitible for casual destruction.

Umbilical cord stem cells are generally grouped with adult stem cells.

What they want is for the public to accept the idea that some human life is suitible for casual destruction. I agree with you there, but there is very little reporting of adult stem cells breakthroughs and if they are reported the media buries it.

The dinosaur liberal newsrooms are fully aware of what they are doing when they mix adult and embyonic stem cell research into the generic term "stem cell research" for their headlines and leading paragraphs; they are shamelessly lying and spinning on behalf of their political party, the Democrats.

Which, of course, is true, and a practice very consistent with their beliefs.
These guys can't think much beyond their (or their girlfriend's) next abortions though.

The stories I've read specifically said that a functioning liver was grown.. a very small one similar to what you would find in a 2nd trimester fetus. Either way it's a great accomplishment that will possibly lead to growing a replacement liver for a person on a transplant list or possibly using those cells to regenerate a damaged liver "in-place" while the patient maintains on dialysis. What will really get this ball rolling is if a way is found to multiply the number of adult stem cells harvested.
