This information had to be released; it in no way undermines the President rather, it strengthens his case.

The information was about classified intelligence activities that the President wanted to keep away from leaky congress (This wasn't about the Iraqi documents).

The information did not have to be released and the information had nothing to do with the President's case.

Hoekstra wrote a letter to the President saying that the President needs to brief Congress, that the President was holding back surveillance info from Congress and that the President was breaking the law by doing so.

The Hoekstra nasty-note magically then found its way to the NY Times undermining the President.

I thought you were speaking of the documents. But in any case Hoekstra is no friend of the Times.
