It is interesting that Lincoln's name was not even allowed on the ballots in the South." Because the Republican party decided Lincoln was their man and Southern statesmen took that as an indication the empasse between them and the North had become unbridgeable. It's interesting that Lincoln's name wasn't even on the ballot until the third one which, when his name was vetted, only fueled states' decisions to secede. No, Lincoln didn't have any more of a place on the seceding states' ballots than Vincete Fox would have had on an American's ballot.

Lincoln was the legimate nominee for a major American party.

The Southern states kept his name off the ballot, not allowing the people to vote for him.

They were still voting for President of the United States and had not seceded.

Now, the fact that they found the GOP unacceptable was due to one reason, the GOP had a platform of limiting slavery.

"...that is, a tyranny that shrouded itself in the cloak of morality." That was...Lincoln's army.

You mean the United States Army-the one under the Stars and Stripes?

You forgot to mention the Indians (Native Americans) who owned slaves. I didnt learn that in school either , but I did learn it.

May I ask, what was the slaver state of DE doing in the Union, apparently the only 1 completely of its own free will? (I know MD does not count, because it was held hostage to protect their capital.) Was Lincoln really interested in slaves? I think as stated elsewhere more interested in "union", if you can call it that when your brothers don't like you.

No one said that there were no slave states that still held with the Union.

Kentucky for one.

That is why slavery was not dealt with until 2 years into the war.

But if the North did not go to war to end slavery at first, the South did attempt to secede to keep it.

So slavery was the major issue of the war, since it led to the South attempting to secede over it.

The GOP never thought they could end slavery where it already existed since it was protected by the Constitution.

They only wanted to limit its spread, hoping for its eventual demise.

Even this was unacceptable to the South, who now saw slavery as part of their culture and would not allow it to die even a slow death.

I agree with the Col. and another poster that a dress code should be put in place either uniforms or high standard clothing (like one would wear to church or work) You obviously haven't been to church or to work lately.

Well, I know church standards have dropped, but at most jobs you still have to look decent.

Having a decent dress code for children would prepare them for the 'real' world.

Then read the work 'A Patriot's History of the United States, from Columbus's great discovery to the War on Terror' by Larry Schwikart and Michael Allen (2004)

Now, the fact is that the Democratic Party split over slavery before the election.

LOL I don't know what kind of job you have. But working for a major industrial company, I can tell you we have "professionals" that look like the dregs of high school. And it's not that they have to work in the test areas or the machine shops either.

Most companies do have some dress code.

I'm a manufacturer's rep. When the National Guy comes out to see me he wears a golf shirt to make sales calls.

OK. Do you think Stalin et al, thought it was the moral thing to do to get rid of enemies of the state, permanently?

Facism, Communism and Islam do cloak their immoral acts with appeals to the 'good'.

That is why I would classify the Confederacy as a 'proto-facist' system, believing that based on race, one had a right to rule over another man.

So?

I am sure many companies are loose in their dress code, but most aren't.

"Where did you learn Confederate history? The Southern Poverty Law Center? The NAACP?"

That is quite funny! I had similar thoughts too, for it was all news to me. Seems like everytime one turns around, somebody comes up with a new and improved reason to hate...

well, i don't suffer FOOLS and/or BIGOTS well.

and that is PRECISELY what most of the members of the "DAMNyankee coven of lunatics, bigots,HATERS & at least ONE outright RACIST" are.

fwiw, these threads USED to be very restrained & gentlemanly/gentalWOMANly. then the BIGOTS started posting KNOWING lies, REVISIONIST bilge & personal attacks on ALL the southerners here & things haven't been the same since. stick around & read their LIES. you'll see i'm correct about them. also, if you saw the OBSCENE & RACIST nature of the e-mails that flood my "in-box" from these same BIGOTS you'd have a better understanding of why i've changed.

SORRY, but once more (as usual) you are posting FICTION.

the FACTS are that you KNOW better & CHOOSE to post BILGE & SELF-serving, sanctimonious LIES, hoping (evidently) that SOMEBODY/ANYBODY will believe you.

FEW do.
