China puts up border wall vs. North Korea:

And to think that a South Korean will take over the United Nations, to which Mexico has threatened to protest our own border wall... Ha!

Want some more good news?

Last week there was a lot of talk in the press that the Leftist Presidential candidate in Ecuador, Rafael Correa, might sweep into power in the first round of Ecuador's presidential campaign, which permits a candidate to win if he gets 35% of the vote on the first ballot. Everyone understood that Correa couldn't win a run-off, but there was all kinds of talk that he would lead the pack and get 35%.

The surprising result? Correa came in second with 22% of the total vote to Alvaro Noboa, a very wealthy Ecuadoran, who had 27%. Correa is in the runoff but you can stick a fork in him, he's done.

Hugo Chavez apparently will not get his wish for one of the temporary seats on the UN Security Council for Venezuela. Though the balloting is continuing and a country needs two-thirds of those voting to get a seat, Guatemala has remained consistently ahead. Last I saw, it was 118 for Guatemala and 76 for Venezuela. The leftist regimes in Latin America, with the notable exception of Chile, whom Chavez's ambassador alienated by criticizing the historical record of the Christian Democrats last month, are standing by Venezuela and they're getting the anti-American vote elsewhere, but evidently the major European powers are using their influence, along with that of the U.S., to stop Venezuela from getting the seat. It's not a big deal for us, but it's really huge for Venezuela and within Latin America.

And I've been reading the El Universal reporting on the Tabasco elections. There are reports of kidnappings, burning of ballot boxes, detention of activists, violent attacks, radio stations attempting to intimidate voters, vote buying, and more. It must have been a scene!

Well, Chavez is annoying one of his biggest supporters it would seem: Citgo:

As for Guatemala, I'm more of a fan of El Salvador as they are pro-USA down there, not married to petroleum like Mexico and perhaps even Guatemala (at least through its illegal workers who flee to Mexico) and the Salvadorans actually maintain peacekeeping forces in Iraq (voluntarily and with pride). Can you imagine if THEY were in the corrupt UN council?

As for the PRD, I guess their motto is: if all else fails, whine. Kind of like the country's stance on our border wall response to their institutionalized racism against us gringos. What I don't yet see is Bush's signing the border wall funding into law. Hopefully he won't let the initiative die for lack of signing on time? That would be a setback for Mexican reformers, to say the least.
