Recall asks:

"While they can use "Baptist" isn't it true you have a special Church logo/symbol that they can't use?"

nevadan:

Yes, that is true. If the Westborough group were to use a denominational logo, then yes they could be legally approached by the denomination to "cease and desist" from using it. However, I don't know if they are using any denominational logo or are claiming to belong to any particular Baptist denomination.

I just visited one of their sites. I didn't see anything like a logo. Actually, there is nothing there that even looks Church related. Just Hate, lunacy, and evil, evil evil.

I don't think the media are asking the right questions. Here's what I would ask them:

1. You seem to think everybody is going to Hell in a handbasket. Tell me in a nutshell how one gets "saved".

2. You seem to focus on sin a lot. Is it necessary to be perfect to get to Heaven or is it by Grace and faith in Christ? Do you think you are perfect? Why are you going to Heaven when apparently almost nobody else is?

3. I don't recall Jesus telling the woman at the well she was a whore or bimbo, do you?

4. You say the little Amish girls are going to Hell because of something the governor of their state did. Could you explain where in the Bible it says that you go to hell because of something your leader did. What about individual choice?

5. You don't mention Jesus very much. Do you believe that Jesus is God?

6. When Jesus lost his temper, it was only with religious hypocrites and people who were hurting others. He treated "sinners" with respect and kindness, showing them the way to salvation. How are you following His example?

7. In one of your interviews you tell Julie Bandaras that she was going to Hell and there was nothing she could do about it. This is not Scriptural. According to the New Testament, there is a way to salvation for all sinners--what about the thief on the cross--the Apostle Paul who murdered Christians?

Silly me.....I expect the MSM to know something about the Bible.

For the record, the things this group says and does don't add up. I've encountered many weird forms of religious fanatics and I have a gut feeling that his group is a plant being used to make Christians look bad. I wish somebody would do some serious background checks on these people to expose their "real" agenda. They're a little too obsessed by publicity and "shock" value. There's something going on there.

Those are good observations. I think this Fred Phelps guy is just an opportunist (like Jesse Jackson) who uses controversy to make money. He keeps in the media light (or darkness, if you prefer) by doing and saying outrageous things. I think the only members in the "church" are family members. Something else that is interesting is that he used to raise money for the DNC - in particular for Al Gore. He is even pictured with Al Gore - see article from "Logcabin Republicans": http://www.logcabinwa.com/archive/200010251159.shtml

Another interesting article that came up on my google search was on a left-wing blog: motherjones.com. Left-wing site but an interesting read on Phelps and his family. The thread is: http://www.motherjones.com/news/feature/1999/03/lauerman.html

I am no fan of Sean Hannity. Not by any stretch of the imagination. But, after reading a transcript of their interview with this woman when she and her *cough* church *cough* were protesting funerals of American soldiers, I would guess that Mr Hannity offered air time to these nut cases hoping to spare these Amish families any more grief than they already are experiencing. Because of their rejection of so many modern things, it is unlikely that they would ever have to hear what this woman is saying. Whether or not that was the intention of the shows produceres, it certainly did manage to divert these so called christians away from the funerals. For that one reason only, I am glad that the offer was made and accepted. This liberal gives you a standing ovation for accomplishing that. Bravo!

I am deeply curious as to where these people get their walking-around money. Somebody is financing them. Is their church a 501c3? If so, their finances would be public record.

Anyone who knows where the money comes from, please to ping me. Would especially like to hear from anyone in Topeka.

My hunch is that mischievous radical leftists are funding them.

dittoes. They are just too "helpful" to a particular ideology (living up to the worst stereotypes, etc) to be believed. I'll even go tinfoil and say they stink of Soros.

PS--if we knew who was funding him, we'd know everything.

Don't be too hard on them. They probably say the same things about people who accept the Theory of Evolution.
