I think the comparison with the priests is instructive. I've been following the story about a priest who stole over a million dollars from his parish to support a very flamboyant gay lifestyle (no kids involved, but an adult lover). It seems that his criminality would have been detected much, much sooner if everyone, including his parishioners, had not been reluctant to speak out against what has become--even in the Church--a protected lifestyle.

What ever happened to the values that weren't narcissistic, like honor, courage and committment, not to mention love and just plain common decency? I was shown those values when I was young, but I've rarely seen them since I've grown up. Still, they are out there if you seek them.

Native speakers of English in the late 20th and early 21st century refer to all acts of erotic gratification whether natural or unnatural, moral or immoral, procreative or sterile as "sex".
OED-style, I would point to this usage as dating to at least the 1970's with the exchange between Woody Allen and Diane Keaton's characters in Annie Hall showing that even mastrubation is included in the meaning of the word.

I happen to think both homosexuality and foot fetishes are sick. Does that mean you would be compelled to tell me if you have a foot fetish? No, of course not.
