He has the support of state Senator Jeff Atwater, who is described as among the most conservative state Senators. I take it as a good sign.

I think it's gonna be really tough for the GOP to hold this 47% Gore district with Mark Foley's name on the ballot, but they have as good a replacement as they could hope for so more power to them.

No, he can't, and Florida definitely does not have better laws than Texas. The Florida ballots have already been printed and Mark Foley's name will appear on the ballot. What Florida law permits, however, is for the local GOP to designate a recipient for Mark Foley's votes on Election Day. In other words, any votes cast for Mark Foley will in actuality be counted as votes for Joe Negron, even though Negron won't appear anywhere on the ballot.

PS. And might I add that, to my knowledge, this provision has not been fully litigated in the courts. I expect an automatic legal challenge in the event that Negron is certified the winner-by-proxy.

Fox reported this afternoon that bush favors Atwater. I like hom and think he probably has better visability. Never heard of Negron, before.

Does Atwater have the money to compete on such short notice? Negron has about $1 million from his AG campaign. The above article says Atwater backs Negron.

He is a religious person and Family man,and a loyal Republican who gave up his run for Attorney General against Bill Mccollum for party unity. He is term limited so is the best choice, especially to avoid having to replace anyone in another Seat. The People that donated money to him for the Attorney General race can ask that the money be put in the Congressional race seat.

If voters went to the booth with the assumption that a vote for Foley = Negron, it would be a huge reversal over the logic the Florida Supremes used in Gore. Of course I will put nothing past the Florida Supremes in doing mental gymnastics to try to promote liberalism.

Actually, my expectation is that a federal court challenge would be the bigger threat to Negron's certification, assuming for the sake of argument that Mahoney doesn't win outright.

Atwater is backing Joe Negron, and also Joe interned with Skip Bafalis who was The congressman a few years back before Foley. Ann Decker worked for the last three congressman for the District and is an Aide to Mark Foley in his Florida Office. Joe would probably keep all the staff of Mark Foley because they are really excellent and especially in Decker's case very experienced and great employees.

US law and the US Supreme Court made it quite clear, the rules going into the election can not be changed after the election, which is why the Floriduh Supremes got bitched slapped 9-0 the first time around. If the law was generally understood that Negron would get Foley's votes prior to the election, I don't see that being overturned by any court.

Supposedly the rules allow Foley's name to be removed and a new candidate to be on the ballot.

Let's see if Jeb Bush has the backbone.

Anyone closely tied to Mark Foley will be scrutinized as to whether they knew about his behavior with Pages, whether they ever did anything to facilitate it or to hide the truth about it. That would include staff who are usually very close to the officeholder. And I'm not accusing anyone in particular of anything in particular. I'm just saying there's a potential problem.

I think Negron should be able to transfer his funds from his AG race to this race, however, I think Foley cannot give Negron any of his cash (which I would suspect at this point, he wouldnt want to do anyway)
