Chinese hackers prompt Navy college site closure

http://washingtontimes.com/national/20061130-103049-5042r.htm

By Bill Gertz
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
November 30, 2006

Chinese computer hackers penetrated the Naval War College network
earlier this month, forcing security authorities to shut down all e-mail
and official computer network work at the Navy's school for senior
officers.

Navy officials said the computer attack was detected Nov. 15 and two
days later the U.S. Strategic Command raised the security alert level
for the Pentagon's 12,000 computer networks and 5 million computers.

A spokesman for the Navy Cyber Defense Operations Command, located in
Norfolk , said "network intrusions" were detected at the Newport , R.I. ,
military school two weeks ago.

"The system-network connection was terminated and known affected systems
were removed and are being examined for forensic evidence to determine
the extent of the intrusion," said Lt. Cmdr. Doug Gabos, the spokesman.

"The Naval War College computer system-network is used by students at
the war college and contains Navy Professional Reading Program and other
materials, all of which are unclassified information."

The FBI and Naval Criminal Investigative Service are investigating the
breach, another official said.

The Naval War College trains senior officers, conducts war games and
carries out some classified research such as studies of future warfare.
The college's Web site was not accessible yesterday.

Adm. Michael Mullen, chief of naval operations, recently directed the
war college's Strategic Studies Group to begin work to develop concepts
for waging cyber-warfare, a Navy spokesman said.

"The Naval War College is where the Navy's Strategic Studies Group is
planning and practicing cyber-war techniques, and now they don't even
have e-mail access," one U.S. official said.

U.S. defense officials said intelligence reports indicated that the
cyber-attack on the college came from China , which a recent
congressional report said has begun a series of computer network attacks
against defense and military systems in the United States code-named
"Titan Rain."

Retired Air Force Maj. Gen. Richard Goetze, a Naval War College
professor, told a class Monday in Washington that Chinese computer
hackers were behind the network attack. Gen. Goetze told students that
communications were hobbled because the Chinese "took down" the entire
Naval War College computer network.

Students and professors at the college now have to use private e-mail
from home, raising security questions.

Cmdr. Gabos declined to comment on the origin of the attack. "The nature
and extent of intrusion are operational issues," he said. "I can tell
you it was an isolated incident and did not affect other elements of
Department of Defense."

Sushi bar identified as probable poisoning site; Gaidar bodyguard met with Litvinenko

Three Russian businessmen, employees of a security company in Moscow,
who
met Mr Litvinenko at a hotel after he had been to the sushi bar had
yesterday gone to ground. ... One of the men, former FSB bodyguard
Andrei
Lugovoy who had known Mr Litvinenko for 10 years, was in charge of
security
for the former Russian prime minister, Yegor Gaidar, who was last night
being treated for suspected poisoning after falling ill in Dublin.

Sushi bar identified as key link in poisoning

By Jason Bennetto and Cahal Milmo

Published: 01 December 2006

Detectives have discovered when the former Russian spy Alexander
Litvinenko
came into contact with the radioactive material that was to kill him.

After retracing the route taken by Mr Litvinenko on the day he fell
ill,
anti-terrorist officers believe the ex-KGB agent was poisoned in or
very
close to the sushi bar in central London that he visited to meet an
Italian
contact on 1 November.

Detailed forensic analysis, including radiation testing, of the places
Mr
Litvinenko visited in the hours before he went to Itsu in Piccadilly
have
found no trace of radioactivity. This strongly suggests he was poisoned
while in the restaurant, where traces of nuclear material were found.

Mr Litvinenko, 43, an outspoken critic of the Russian President,
Vladimir
Putin, became ill on the day he visited the sushi bar and died on 23
November from polonium-210 poisoning.

In a further development it was disclosed that extremely low-level
radioactive contamination has been discovered in nine buildings, two
British
Airways planes which flew to Moscow, and a car used to take Mr
Litvinenko to
hospital. A third BA aircraft is being examined in Moscow.

The current focus of the police inquiry is what happened at the sushi
bar
where Mr Litvinenko met Mario Scaramella, an Italian academic who
denies
having anything to do with the poisoning.

Mr Scaramella, who runs an organisation that tracks nuclear waste, said
earlier this week that he had been tested and was not contaminated.

Scotland Yard pinpointed the sushi bar when they traced Mr Litvinenko's
movements after he left his home in Muswell Hill, north London. By
using
information from his mobile phone records, Oyster travel card and CCTV
footage, detectives plotted his route to Piccadilly Tube station.
Locations
where he stopped along the way were tested for radiation contamination,
but
all proved negative.

As part of the inquiry detectives are testing aircraft used by several
people that met Mr Litvinenko on 1 November to discover if any of them
brought in radioactive material, or left Britain contaminated.

Three Russian businessmen, employees of a security company in Moscow,
who
met Mr Litvinenko at a hotel after he had been to the sushi bar had
yesterday gone to ground. It is not clear if they were in hiding, or
were
being questioned by the Russian authorities.

One of the men, former FSB bodyguard Andrei Lugovoy who had known Mr
Litvinenko for 10 years, was in charge of security for the former
Russian
prime minister, Yegor Gaidar, who was last night being treated for
suspected
poisoning after falling ill in Dublin.

Siniora faces Hezbollah calls to quit

Lebanon's Western-backed premier Fuad Siniora has faced pressure to
quit in Beirut from hundreds of thousands of protestors of the
Shiite movement Hizbollah and its pro-Syrian allies. Since that
rally, demonstrators have blocked access roads and erected tents
close to cabinet offices. Large numbers of security forces are
deployed. At the rally, Christian opposition leader Michel Aoun also
called on Siniora to resign and demanded a national unity
government. Siniora says his cabinet will stay on. It was weakened
recently by the departure of six opposition ministers and the
assassination of an anti-Syrian minister. Visiting Jordan, German
Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier says Lebanon's situation is
alarming. Steinmeier is due to visit Siniora in Beirut on Saturday.

Two insurgents killed in Iraq, 27 detained

In Iraq, US and Iraqi troops have clashed with gunmen who killed one
Iraqi soldier and wounded five. US forces claim to have killed two
insurgents and detained 27 in multiple raids, while seven people
were killed in two separate car bomb attacks. One woman was injured
who was being used as a human shield. US forces also seized two
weapons depots. While Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki received
support from US President George W. Bush after a Thursday meeting in
Jordan, he has said that his security personnel is ill-equipped to
tackle the violence in Iraq. Nonetheless, Maliki said his forces
would be able to take over security command from US troops by June
2007. Data from Interior Ministry officials shows a 44 percent leap
in civilian casualties in November compared with October.

Today is World AIDS Day

World AIDS Day is being marked around the globe as the epidemic
continues to get worse, with an estimated four million new cases of
HIV reported each year. UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan called on
people to keep momentum strong in the fight against AIDS, adding
that politicians should be made accountable. Sub-Saharan Africa
remains the hardest-hit region, with 24.7 million people affected.

Britain: 2nd contaminant with polonium

British broadcaster Sky News has reported that an Italian contact of
the fatally poisoned former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko has
tested positive for the same radioactive substance, Polonium 210.
British police have not confirmed this. Sky says the academic Mario
Scaramella, who met Litvinenko at a London restaurant shortly before
the Russian fell ill, apparently has "significant" contamination,
but is not showing symptoms. Pathologists, meanwhile, ahave finished
a post-mortem on the body of Litvinenko, who was a severe critic of
the Kremlin. Russia has denied being behind Litvenenko's poisoning,
as has Scaramella. Britain says radiation traces have been found at
12 locations. Three British Airways planes used between Moscow and
London were also checked.

Hundreds die in Philippines typhoon

The Red Cross says up to 388 people have been killed and 96 are
missing in the Philippines in mudslides caused by Typhoon Durian. It
said several villages close to Mount Mayon, about 320 km south-east
of Manila, were buried by mud and rocks dislodged in rains brought
by the typhoon. The death toll is expected to rise as reports come
in from other regions that have been cut off. Durian is the fourth
typhoon to hit the Philippines in three months.

Germany approves anti-terror database

German lawmakers have approved the creation of a new anti-terrorism
database which is to go into effect next year. Officials hope it
will make it easier to find suspects through better coordination
between police and security agencies. The database will list names
and information that could identify a suspect, but other details
that could help determine whether a suspect is a threat -- such as
professional qualifications -- would only be available with a
further query. The Federal Office for the Protection of the
Constitution is also to have access to telecommunications, airline
and financial data. Opponents fear that authorities using the
database could infringe on privacy rights of individuals.

Amsterdam court jails four radicals

In the Netherlands four radical Muslims have been jailed for
planning attacks on anti-Islam politicians and the offices of the
Dutch AIVD intelligence service. The ringleader Samir Azzouz got
eight years. Three others got terms of three to four years on new

argued that the convicted radicals were an extension of a group led
by Mohammad Bouyeri. He was jailed for life last year for the murder
of Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh. During Azzouz' trial the court
heard that he and others were found in possession of automatic
weapons and jihad training manuals. Azzous, who has dual Dutch and
Moroccan nationality, had even made a testament video.

The US dollar has fallen to the lowest level against the pound since
Britain crashed out of the Exchange Rate Mechanism in 1992. The US
greenback also lost heavily on exchange markets across the world,
tumbling against the euro and yen due to fears of faltering growth
in the US economy. Sterling rose to $1.9747, the strongest exchange

15 percent against the dollar and poised for its best yearly
performance since 1990.

http://www.dailyindia.com/show/88220.php/Bajaur-airstrike-may-have-killed-al-Zawahri

Bajaur airstrike may have killed al-Zawahri

Washington, Dec 1 (ANI): The absence of any audio and video tape releases by the Al Qaeda in last one month have been inferred by the US security analysts as a breach of the "Al Qaeda's inner concentric security perimeters" during the October 31 Bajaur airstrike that might have also hit Al Qaeda's deputy Chief Ayman al-Zawahri.

According to a commentary issued by Stratfor, the Texas-based news intelligence service, 'silence' from al-Zawahri, who otherwise has "shown keenness in keeping the world abreast of his status", indicates that Bajaur airstrike "either killed him or has hit so close to home that it has forced him to go deeper underground".

"Since the airstrike, there has been no word from al-Zawahri. There has been no word from Osama Bin Laden either," commented Stratfor.

However, analysts also added that if al-Zawahri was dead, the terror communication network would find it too difficult to hide the news and "by now it would have leaked the news of his death".

"It would be very hard to hide the death of either al-Zawahri or Bin Laden, even if US intelligence could not confirm the killing", said the Stratfor commentary, thereby adding other possible reasons for the Al Qaeda's stoic silence.Other possible reason noted by them was the possibility of the complete destruction of the jihadist communication network.

"It could be that the October 31 missile strike has created technical obstacles to issuing videotapes, which would explain why there has not been much output from As-Sahab, Al Qaeda's, since the madrassa was hit. But given that As-Sahab's production facilities are unlikely to be located in the remote tribal badlands straddling the Afghan-Pakistani border, technical difficulties are not likely the case," the Daily Times quoted Stratfor commentary.

The US analysts also said that there was again a possibility that al-Zawahri has likely survived, and is trying to stay out of the radar. But whatever it may have done, the airstrike has hit the terrorist group very hard.

Al Qaeda views the location and timing of the madrassa strike as a penetration of the movements and schedules of their group. From the Al Qaeda's point of view, the US and the Pakistani intelligence has come very close to one of its inner concentric security perimeters and that penetration have already taken place. Therefore, it has brought its communications, especially its communication to the outside world, to a grinding halt, argued Stratfor.

"The lack of a communiqu‚ from al-Zawahri is much more likely the result of a conscious decision to maintain radio silence because of a breach in Al Qaeda's operational security net and it is going to maintain this posture until it identifies the security breach and seals it. This could be matter of weeks or of months. Once it is confident that it has re-established operational security, Al Qaeda will resume releasing video communiqu‚s," Stratfor added. (ANI)

Russian probe finds fake drug market big

MOSCOW, Dec. 1 (UPI) -- Sales of counterfeit drugs in Russia could be as high as $300 million annually, an investigation by the country's Interior Ministry showed.

Police found the number of violations found during the 10-day Operation Pharmacologist exceeded by 12 times the number of violations reported during 2005, the Itar-Tass news agency said. Most of the violations were found in kiosks (8,500 instances) and municipal drugstores (3,000).

"The annual volume of sales of counterfeit medicines is worth $200 million to $300 million, according to experts" and based on the operation's findings, Alexander Chekalin, first deputy for the Interior Ministry, said Friday.

Chekalin said police also found 642 cases of sales of biological active additives through kiosks. He said the additives were produced elsewhere and did not meet Russian safety standards.

"The results of the operation show the high degree of criminalization" in this area, as well as a lack of departmental oversight, he said.

Finches feasting in Minnesota supermarket

MINNEAPOLIS, Dec. 1 (UPI) -- A Minneapolis-area supermarket has hired professional help to evict a pair of avian invaders that are having a feast in the bulk foods section.

So far Mark Anderson of Plunkett Pest Control has been unable to capture the two finches who have taken up residence at the Rainbow Foods Store in Maplewood, Minn., The Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.

Besides feasting on spilled nuts in bulk foods, the pair of birds was spotted dive-bombing the salad bar.

Anderson used a large floppy net to try to capture them but they escaped at the last second.

He planned to try again Friday.

"It's pretty rare to find birds in grocery stores," Anderson says. "But you'll see them in Home Depots and other big-box stores.

Barn swallows have built nests in the vestibule of Maplewood's Home Depot which is located just down the road from the Rainbow Foods Store.

Analysis: Europe 's spy in al-Qaida, Part 1

WASHINGTON, Nov. 27 (UPI) -- A Muslim man who was a spy in the mid-1990s for several European intelligence services inside the global jihadi network that later became al-Qaida has written a memoir saying the agencies did not understand the nature of the threat it posed.

"Inside the Jihad," written under the pseudonym Omar Nasiri, is an astonishingly detailed account of a young man's journey from the fringe of the Islamic extremist movement in Belgium to two terrorist training camps in Afghanistan .

Along the way, Nasiri says he smuggled a car load of high explosives from Brussels to Morocco; fingered one of the organizers of the 1995 Paris metro bomb attacks In London; and met Abu Zubaydah, who later became one of Osama bin Laden's top recruiters of Western jihadis, in the training camps at Khalden and Darunta in Afghanistan.

"The broad outlines of the story have been confirmed to me," and to a growing list of other major media outlets, "by intelligence officials from several European countries," said Gordon Corera, a British Broadcasting Corp. correspondent who Nasiri first approached with his story after the London subway bombings last year.

Analysis: Europe 's spy in al-Qaida, Part 2

WASHINGTON, Nov. 28 (UPI) -- A Muslim man who was a spy inside al-Qaida for several European intelligence services in the 1990s says he was cut loose right after the group bombed U.S. embassies in East Africa -- the very moment when its global reach and capabilities became so bloodily apparent.

The official who was leading the CIA's efforts against al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden at the time says he never saw any sign that the agency was getting intelligence from such a source from its European allies -- raising significant questions about transatlantic cooperation.

In a memoir published last week in Europe and America , Omar Nasiri (a pseudonym) says he worked first for the French external security service, the DGSE, who sent him in 1995 to infiltrate the training camps springing up in Afghanistan in the chaos following the defeat of the Soviet Union .

When he returned the following year having met with key al-Qaida recruiter Abu Zubaydah, Nasiri writes in the memoir "Inside the Jihad," the DGSE sent him to London , where he worked for them and British intelligence in a highly unusual joint operation, keeping tabs on Islamic extremists at the Finsbury Park mosque and other meeting places.

But Nasiri says, after he dropped out of contact with his handlers the day of the August 1998 attacks on two U.S. embassies in East Africa, they hustled him out of the country, with his British contact telling him to "Leave behind everything that connects you to London -- phone numbers, addresses, photographs. Everything."

Qaeda controls western Iraq : US intelligence

WASHINGTON: US forces can neither crush the insurgency in western Iraq nor counter the rising popularity of Al Qaeda in the area, the Washington Post reported on Tuesday, citing a secret Marine Corps

intelligence report.

The report, written by senior military intelligence officer Colonel Peter Devlin in August, focuses on the largely Sunni Iraqi province of Al-Anbar . As of mid-November the problems remained

the same, a senior US intelligence official told the Post. “The fundamental questions of lack of control, growth of the insurgency and criminality” remain the same, said the official. “The social and political

situation has deteriorated to a point” that US and Iraqi troops “are no longer capable of militarily defeating the insurgency in al-Anbar,” the report says.

Iraq’s Sunni population is “embroiled in a daily fight for survival,” fears “pogroms” by the Shiite majority, and is increasingly dependent on Al Qaeda in Iraq as its only hope against growing Iranian dominance in Baghdad, it adds.

Syrian Islamic Militant Leader Killed

The Syrian leader of an Islamic militant group blew himself up Tuesday after trying to cross into Lebanon and engaging in a gunbattle with Syrian border forces. Two border guards were wounded.

The incident raises questions about the security of the Lebanese-Syrian frontier, which Israel contends is a gateway for weapons to rearm Hezbollah militants.

It comes at a time of increased tension in Lebanon as the struggle intensifies between the anti-Syria government and factions led by Hezbollah , Syria 's ally in Lebanon .

The Syrian Interior Ministry said in a statement the clash began when Omar Abdullah, 28, the leader of the Islamic militant group Tawhid and Jihad, was challenged when he tried to cross into Lebanon with fake documents.

Tawhid and Jihad, Arabic for Monotheism and Holy War, was the name originally used by al-Qaida in Iraq and in 2004, the State Department designated it a terrorist group under its original name. Groups linked to or sympathetic to al-Qaida have used the name Tawhid and Jihad, but such a group had not been known to be operating in Syria .

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A federal judge who dismissed a challenge of the Bush
administration's domestic spying program said the case against a
convicted
al-Qaida supporter was built on statements he made to investigators,
not
evidence from warrantless eavesdropping.

The challenge by Iyman Faris, now serving a 20-year prison sentence,
was
among the first to seek evidence of warrantless eavesdropping by the
National Security Agency, a practice that began after the terrorist
attacks
of Sept. 11, 2001.

Protests escalate in Beirut

Protests escalate in Beirut

Globe and Mail Update and Associated Press

Beirut - Protests in the centre of Beirut escalated Friday and
Hezbollah
supporters have surrounded the Lebanese Parliament buildings.

On Friday, their advance was blocked by special forces troops loyal to
Prime
Minister Fuad Saniora's government.

Under the direction of yellow-capped Hezbollah supporters, crowds began
pitching tents, refusing to allow anyone in or out of the Parliament.

Earlier, hundreds of thousands of protesters from Hezbollah and its
pro-Syrian opposition allies amassed in downtown Beirut seeking to
force the
resignation of Mr. Saniora, who was holed up in his office ringed by
hundreds of police and combat troops.

The Shiite Muslim Hezbollah and its allies mobilized their bases for
the
protest, arranging to bus supporters from all over Lebanon and handing
out
free gasoline coupons to people in remote regions.

The crowd, which police estimated at 800,000, created a sea of Lebanese
flags that blanketed downtown. Hezbollah officials put the number at 1
million - one-fourth of Lebanon's population.

Mr. Saniora went about his schedule in what appeared to be a tactic to
ignore the throngs that quickly filled the streets. With heavy traffic
reported on highways leading downtown, pro-government factions urged
calm.

"Saniora out! We want a free government!" protesters shouted through
loudspeakers. The crowd roared in approval amid the deafening sound of
Hezbollah revolutionary and nationalist songs. "We want a clean
government,"
read one placard, in what has become the opposition's motto.

Heavily armed soldiers and police had closed all roads to downtown,
feverishly unfurling barbed wire and placing barricades.

Despite Hezbollah's assurances the protests will be peaceful, the heavy
security came amid fears the protests may turn into clashes between
pro- and
anti-Syrian factions or that Hezbollah supporters could try to storm
Mr.
Saniora's government headquarters.

Hezbollah's security men, donning caps, formed two lines between the
protesters and the security forces to prevent clashes.

Launching a long-threatened campaign to force Lebanon's U.S.-backed
government from office, Hezbollah and its pro-Syrian allies said the
demonstration would be followed by a wave of open-ended protests.

The battle is a fallout from the summer war between Hezbollah and
Israel
that ravaged parts of Lebanon. The guerrilla force's strong resistance
against Israeli troops sent its support among Shiites skyrocketing,
emboldening it to grab more political power. Hezbollah also feels Mr.
Saniora did not do enough to support it during the fight.

Pro-government groups, in turn, resent Hezbollah for sparking the fight
by
snatching two Israeli soldiers, dragging Lebanon into war with Israel.

A defiant Saniora vowed his government would not fall, warning in a
nationally televised speech Thursday night that "Lebanon's independence
is
threatened and its democratic system is in danger."

Mr. Saniora asked Lebanese to show support by raising the Lebanese flag
on
their windows and balconies. Hezbollah's leader also called on
protesters to
carry the same banner, the national red and white flag with the
historic
cedar tree in its middle.

But both camps seemed wide apart on what kind of Lebanon they want.

Government supporters accuse Syria of being behind the Hezbollah
campaign,
trying to regain its lost influence in its smaller neighbour. Hezbollah
and
its allies, in turn, say the country has fallen under U.S. domination
and
that they have lost their rightful portion of power.

Tension have been running high between Sunni Muslims, who generally
support
the anti-Syrian government, and Shiites, who lead the pro-Syrian
opposition,
and Lebanon's Christians, who are divided between the two.

In a stark sign of the divide, the spiritual leader of Lebanon's
Sunnis,
Grand Mufti Mohammed Rashid Kabbani, gave Friday prayers at the prime
minister's headquarters in a show of support for Mr. Saniora, a Sunni.

"Fear has gripped the Lebanese," Mr. Kabbani said, appealing for the
protests to end. "The constitution guarantees freedom of expression,
but
trying to overthrow the government in the street is a call for stirring
up
discord among people, and we will not accept this."

Hezbollah had threatened to call for demonstrations unless it and its
allies
obtain a veto-wielding share of the Cabinet - a demand that Mr. Saniora
and
the anti-Syrian parties have rejected. The aim of the protests is to
generate enough popular pressure to further paralyze the government,
forcing
it to step down.

Hezbollah has proven in past rallies that it can draw hundreds of
thousands
of its Shiite supporters into the streets.

Hezbollah's deputy leader, Sheik Naim Kassim, made it clear the fight
is
against "American tutelage" and said the protest action will continue
until
the government falls.

"We will not let you sell Lebanon, we will protect the constitution and
people of Lebanon," Mr. Kassim said on television Friday, addressing
Mr.
Saniora.

The United States has made Lebanon a key front in its attempts to rein
in
Syria and its ally, regional powerhouse Iran. President Bush warned
earlier
this week that the two countries were trying to destabilize Lebanon.

Hezbollah's leader, Sheik Hassan Nasrallah, called for the protests to
be
peaceful. From the other camp, the head of the anti-Syrian bloc in
parliament, Saad Hariri, said his supporters should not hold
counter-demonstrations.

Hundreds of thousands of Lebanese also flooded the downtown area last
week
after Industry Minister Pierre Gemayel was shot dead to show their
support
for Mr. Saniora's government.

Lebanon has had a string of assassinations of anti-Syrian figures in
the
past two years, including a prominent Christian government minister
gunned
down last week and Hariri's father, former prime minister Rafik Hariri,
who
was killed in a February 2005 bombing.

Charges dropped against terrorist Lodhi

Friday December 1, 01:28 PM
Charges dropped against terrorist Lodhi
Charges have been dropped against convicted terrorist Faheem Khalid Lodhi for allegedly lying to Australia 's national security agency.

Lodhi had been ordered to stand trial in the NSW Supreme Court, charged with five counts of providing false information to the Australian Security and Intelligence Organisation (ASIO).

But the charges have been withdrawn by the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions, the court was told.

Prosecutor Geoffrey Bellew SC told an arraignment hearing that the trial did not need to proceed as Lodhi was already serving a substantial sentence.

Earlier this year, Lodhi - who planned to blow up the Australian electricity supply system - was jailed for a maximum of 20 years on three terrorism-related offences.

During his sentencing in August, Justice Anthony Whealy ordered Lodhi serve at least 15 years.

The 36-year-old Pakistan-born architect received the harshest sentence yet handed down in Australia for a terrorism offence.

Lodhi also became the first person convicted of preparing for a terrorist attack on home soil,

He was convicted of acting in preparation for a terrorist act by seeking information about chemicals capable of making explosives.

He also was found guilty of possessing a "terrorism manual" and of buying two maps of the electricity grid, connected with preparation for a terrorist act.

When Lodhi appeared before Justice Whealy in September on the five outstanding charges, the judge questioned whether he should face another trial.

Hearing that a trial could take up to three months, the judge asked whether prosecutors "would be prepared to reappraise their position".

Justice Whealy described the five counts as "minor" when compared to the very serious offences for which he had been jailed.

Mr Bellew told Justice Graham Barr that Lodhi was already serving a substantial sentence and the trial did not need to proceed.

Justice Barr accepted the DPP's submission.

Had the trial proceeded, Lodhi would have been the first person tried in NSW for making false statements under the ASIO Act.

It starts with visual identification

Muslims in US may face Nazi treatment of Jews

Gallup poll shows that 39% of surveyed Americans are in favor of requiring Muslims in US to carry special IDs.

By Bernd Debusmann - WASHINGTON

When radio host Jerry Klein suggested that all Muslims in the United States should be identified with a crescent-shape tattoo or a distinctive arm band, the phone lines jammed instantly.

The first caller to the station in Washington said that Klein must be "off his rocker." The second congratulated him and added: "Not only do you tattoo them in the middle of their forehead but you ship them out of this country."

Another said that tattoos, armbands and other identifying markers such as crescent marks on driver's licenses, passports and birth certificates did not go far enough. "What good is identifying them?" he asked. "You have to set up encampments like during World War Two with the Japanese and Germans."

At the end of the one-hour show, rich with arguments on why visual identification of "the threat in our midst" would alleviate the public's fears, Klein revealed that he had staged a hoax.

"I can't believe any of you are sick enough to have agreed for one second with anything I said," he told his audience on the AM station 630 WMAL, which covers Washington, Northern Virginia and Maryland

"For me to suggest to tattoo marks on people's bodies, have them wear armbands, put a crescent moon on their driver's license on their passport or birth certificate is disgusting. It's beyond disgusting.

"Because basically what you just did was show me how the German people allowed what happened to the Jews to happen ... We need to separate them, we need to tattoo their arms, we need to make them wear the yellow Star of David, we need to put them in concentration camps, we basically just need to kill them all because they are dangerous."

The show aired on November 26, the Sunday after the Thanksgiving holiday, and Klein said in an interview afterwards he had been surprised by the response.

The switchboard went from empty to totally jammed within minutes," said Klein. "There were plenty of callers angry with me, but there were plenty who agreed."

POLLS SHOW WIDESPREAD ANTI-MUSLIM SENTIMENT

Those in agreement are not a fringe minority: A Gallup poll this summer of more than 1,000 Americans showed that 39 percent were in favor of requiring Muslims in the United States, including American citizens, to carry special identification.

Roughly a quarter of those polled said they would not want to live next door to a Muslim and a third thought that Muslims in the United States sympathized with al Qaeda, the extremist group behind the September 11, 2001, attacks on New York and Washington.

A poll carried out by the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), an advocacy group, found that for one in three Americans, the word Islam triggers negative connotations such as "war," "hatred" and "terrorist." The war in Iraq has contributed to such perceptions.

Klein's show followed a week of heated discussions on talk radio, including his own, and online forums over an incident on November 22 involving six Muslim clerics. They were handcuffed and taken off a US Airways flight after passengers reported "suspicious behavior" that included praying in the departure gate area.

The clerics, on their way to a meeting of the North American Imams Federation, were detained in a holding cell, questioned by police and FBI agents, and released. Muslim community leaders saw the incident as yet more evidence of anti-Muslim prejudice.

IGNORANCE SEEN AS KEY PROBLEM

Several American Muslims interviewed on the subject of prejudice over the past few weeks said ignorance was at the core of the problem.

"The level of knowledge is very, very low," said Mohamed Esa, a U.S. Muslim of Arab descent who teaches a course on Islam at McDaniel College in Maryland. "There are 1.3 billion Muslims in the world and some people think they are all terrorists."

Hossam Ahmed, a retired Air Force Reserve colonel who occasionally leads prayer meetings for the small Muslim congregation at the Pentagon, agreed. "Ignorance is the number one problem. Education is of the essence."

There are no hard figures on how many Muslims have been subject to harassment or prejudice and community leaders say that ugly incidents can prompt spontaneous expressions of support. Such as the e-mail a Minneapolis woman sent to CAIR after the imams were taken off their flight.

"I would like to ... help," the e-mail said. "While I cannot offer plane tickets, I would be happy to drive at least 2 or 3 of them. My car is small, but at least some of our hearts in this land of the free are large."

And optimists saw signs of change in the November 4 election of the first Muslim to the U.S. House of Representatives, which has 435 members.

Democrat Keith Ellison, a 43-year-old African-American lawyer, did not stress his religion during his campaign for a Minnesota seat, but said his victory would "signal to people who are not Muslims that Muslims have a lot to offer to the United States and the improvement of our country."

SUNNIS FIGHT BACK AGAINST INSURGENTS

Sunnis targeted by al-Qaeda groups in western Iraq have formed their
own militia.

By Dawood Salman in Anbar

Sunni leaders in lawless western Iraq have formed a kind of citizen’s
militia to combat sustained attacks by insurgent groups linked to
al-Qaeda.

Dubbed the Anbar Salvation Council, the group seeks to gather diverse
tribal groups, political leaders and members of the police and other
security forces.

By representing Sunnis who oppose al-Qaeda groups leading the violent
campaign in the province, the Salvation Council marks an important
counter to the increasing sectarian divide within the country.

Already claiming some success in attacking al-Qaeda-inspired forces,
the Salvation Council is being seized on by the Iraqi and US governments
as a possible means to restore some kind of order in the province.

The main objective of the Salvation Council is to oppose al-Qaeda and
put an end to their power in the west of Iraq. Representatives say that
it was formed in October under the supervision of Prime Minister Nouri
al-Maliki.

“We got full support from the government to terminate Takfiri groups
[radical anti-government Islamists] all over the province,” claimed
Fassal al-Gawod, a member of the Salvation Council who was formerly head
of a provincial council in Anbar.

Al-Qaeda groups have recently held demonstrations in the province, and
regularly distribute leaflets warning people not to cooperate with the
Iraqi government and the multinational forces.

Since 2004, groups purportedly connected to al-Qaeda have blown up
police command offices throughout the province, and threatened security
personnel in order to make them quit. The campaign has targeted government
offices and provincial councils and led to a political and security gap
leaving the province, 110 kilometres west of Baghdad, under control of
insurgents.

The Iraqi Islamic Party, IIP, is one of the key groups that broke the
Sunni political boycott, supported the October 2005 constitutional
referendum, and decided to participate in the December 2005 parliamentary
elections. Now it forms part of the Accord Front, the Sunni parliamentary
bloc, and holds senior posts in the parliament and the government.

As a result, it has also become a prime target for al-Qaeda,
particularly in Anbar province. Since April this year, Tariq al-Hashimi, the
Iraqi vice-president who is secretary-general of the IIP, has lost a
brother and a sister in violent attacks. Another 50 members of the party have
also been killed recently, mainly in the Anbar towns of Fallujah, Hit,
Hadithe, Rawe and Ane, including several heads of provincial councils.

“Al-Qaeda's agenda is against Sunni participation in any political
process," said Abdul-Karim Mohammed, a senior IIP official.

Indeed, insurgents are explicit in their purpose. “Anyone who
participates in any activity with the occupier is against Islam - whether
politician, policeman, or army member, and his destiny is death,"
threatened Wahid Abu al-Awf, a member of al-Qaeda’s branch in the west of
Iraq. “The IIP is the first renegade and we will clean up Anbar of their
Islam renegade ideology.”

Al-Awf’s organisation - formerly known as al-Tawhid and Jihad - was
initially led by Abu-Musab al-Zarqawi and now is headed by Abu Ayub
al-Misri. Osama Bin Laden has recently called on his followers to target
anyone, including Sunnis, cooperating with the Iraqi government.

As a result of the violence, many IIP party members have fled the area,
while those who stay are forced to denounce their membership, with
insurgents publishing confessions complete with photos on walls of mosques,
markets and other public places.

The constant threat has seriously curbed IIP`s presence in the
province, said Sa'ad al-Fayadh, a party member there.

Indeed, public life itself has almost stopped in Anbar as most
government offices are shut and markets are deserted due to continuous clashes
between multi-national forces and the insurgents. Residents are losing
their patience watching the insurgents beheading people and issuing
threatening leaflets to anyone who tries to go to work or school.

"We don't know what those criminals hope to gain by depriving us of
studying," said Ayman Sa'ad, student of computer science at Anbar
University.

Despite the political success of the IIP, they have not had an armed
wing or specific militia to protect themselves, as Shia groups in
parliament do.

Sa'adoon Ali, professor of political science at al-Nahrain University
in Baghdad, attributes the party’s vulnerability to its failure to
“encourage its members and supporters to join security apparatus or form
a special guard force. They have become an easy prey for al-Qaeda
insurgents.”

As a result, leaders in the province created the Anbar Salvation
Council, with the backing of tribes, Iraqi security officials and political
groups.

“We support any initiative that might lead to stability,” said
Abdul-Karim Mohammed, the senior IIP official. However, the IIP appears to
be carefully calibrating its position, and has not as yet directly
joined the Salvation Council.

Attacks against civilian officials and others have continued. But last
Saturday tribesmen from the Salvation Council claimed to have killed 55
al-Qaeda fighters in a raid against the militants, and many people in
the province hope the new organisation will make a difference.

The exact relationship to the security forces and the central
government will obviously be a key question. The formation of the Salvation
Council could offer benefits to the Iraqi and US governments, but it could
also pose risks, and according to some reports there has been a
reluctance to provide arms and other direct support.

In any event, the formation of the Salvation Council hardly indicates a
groundswell of support for the United States. The Americans have been
rejected as occupiers, and have been forced to reduce their troop
presence in the province. But for many Anbar residents, they are still the
true enemy, blamed for indirectly helping al-Qaeda precisely because
people feel they have not made a real attempt to restore law and order in
the area.

"All should carefully deal with this conflict which will increase the
real misery we suffer from, the American occupation," said Majid
al-Hasan, a member of provincial council of Anbar province.

"We have to work shoulder by shoulder and put aside tribal feuds that
al-Qaeda exploits to shed blood among Sunnis.”

Daud Salman is an IWPR contributor in Iraq.

BAGHDAD ON THE BRINK

The capital endures another upsurge in sectarian violence, which many
here see as the start of civil war.

By Zaineb Naji in Baghdad

Baghdadis have accustomed themselves to violence and a general sense of
insecurity, but even by the Iraqi capital’s tragic standards, the
past week has been unusually bloody and tense.

The sound of mortar shells and explosions constantly rocked the city,
and clashes between residents and militias have been reported in several
neighbourhoods. Among the latest violent incidents, two Shia were
killed and their bodies hung in Fadhil. In Jamia, a Sunni area, Shia
militias kidnapped a bus in revenge for the killing of a Shia family that had
been threatened by Sunni gunmen. And the ministry of interior was again
attacked by unknown militants.

Sectarian fighting escalated last week after a series of suicide
bombings in the Shia neighbourhood of Sadr City in which more than 200 people
were killed.

“I lost two of my brothers in the suicide bombing,” said Jawad
abdul-Hussein, a 25-year-old street vendor. “Their bodies were torn to
shreds - we could hardly recognise them. It is unbearable: car bombs
target us, multinational forces surround us. How long can ordinary people
like me put up with this.”

Violence continued despite a three-day curfew imposed by the government
in an attempt to regain control and contain sectarian fighting.

“It did not look like a curfew but an opportunity to murder
Sunnis,” cried Luma Sayid, a resident of Jamia. “There was fire everywhere,
and casualties lay in the streets while unknown militants raided
houses.”

As mortar shells fell across the capital, mullahs in Sunni
neighbourhoods urged people not to give up hope.

Luma Sayid said she was so afraid that she locked the doors of her
home, kept the children away from the window, turned off the lights and
peeked through the curtains to see what was going on in the streets.

She said she saw many fighters in black clothes, the typical dress of
the Mahdi militia, roaming around. “ Me and my neighbours tried to
keep in touch all the time via our mobile phones, so that we could warn
each other of an attack on our homes. We did not sleep for three days,”
she said.

In the neighbourhoods of Shurta, Khamisa and Sayidiya, Sunni and Shia
families were expelled from their homes. As the city was under curfew,
police helped some move from one district to another.

Rumours spread over the internet that Mahdi militiamen were set to go
on a killing spree to avenge the suicide bombings in Sadr City.

Such was the climate of fear that people gathered together in each
other’s homes for protection, while armed young men on street corners
guarded their neighbourhoods against the militias. In the Adil, Ghazaliya
and Fadhil districts, these watchmen clashed with militants, leaving
casualties on both sides.

People did not even dare to leave their homes to buy bread because a
number of bakeries had been targeted. Most of them closed, with a few
whose owners lived nearby opening for a few hours a day.

Even when the curfew was lifted, there was little sign of life in the
capital, with few vehicles on the road and the offices of public
institutions deserted. In the ministries of planning and health, only a
quarter of the workforce turned up for work.

“I didn’t allow my kids to go to school and I didn’t go to work
after the curfew because I was still worried about the violence,” said
May Masood, a 30-year-old Shia civil servant.

Schools remain closed in the Mansoor, Dawoodi, Jamia, Adil, Kadhra,
Amiriya and Adhamiya districts. Few students and professors showed up at
the universities, and those that do only stay for a few hours.

The bloody chain of events unfolded after a series of press releases by
Sunni groups in the government and the parliament who threatened a
boycott if not given more power. Not to grant the Sunnis more might lead to
a civil war, they warned.

Harith al-Dhari, the head of the Association of Muslim scholars, an
umbrella group for Sunni clerics, even went as far as saying that he
supports the insurgency and accused Prime Minister Maliki of marginalising
Sunnis in the political process.

The releases poured oil on the fire, provoking violent responses from
both Sunni and Shia militias. The break down in law and order was
disturbingly illustrated by the kidnapping of an unknown number of civil
servants from an office of Sunni-controlled higher education ministry and
the subsequent targeting of the Sadr bloc-run ministry of health was
targeted.

The cycle of violence culminated in five suicide-bombing attacks in
Sadr City, the most deadly single incident since the overthrow of the
regime in April 2003.

The bloody events of the past week have further undermined public
confidence in the current government, with many Baghdadis believing that
they are witnessing the start of a civil war.

“The Iraqi government is incapable of putting a stop to the
bloodshed,” said Iba Mohammed, 35, a teacher, who urged the cabinet to step
down to make way for others more capable of dealing with the situation.

Maliki blamed his own government for the new outbreak of violence,
saying it was a reflection of divisions among ministers. He described the
current state of affairs as a major political crisis which only
politicians could put a stop to.

Some politicians believe that extremists are deliberately stoking up
tensions because they want to show that the authorities are unable to
provide security.

Ridha Jawad Taqi, a Shia parliamentary deputy, said, “Takfiris
(Islamic radicals) and Saddamists are escalating the violence to show that
the ministries of the interior and defense are incapable and the cabinet
should step down.”

Amid all the gloom, some deputies say there are signs of optimism.
Shadha al-Abusi, a Sunni lawmaker, believes that efforts are being made by
politicians to present a more unified stand and demonstrate full
support for the current government.

“The current policy has proved that we all are losers,” he said.

Dialogue? Here's an example of their dialogue:

The Islamic Genocide Plan
By FrontPage Magazine

FrontPageMagazine.com | December 1, 2006

The following words and pictures prove that radical Muslims have long dreamed, plotted, and demonstrated in favor of the annihilation of Israel and all the Jews in the world. Unfortunately, words and demonstrations are not where they are willing to stop. -- The Editors

Mahmoud Ahmedinejad, President of Iran:

. "As the Imam [Ayatollah Khomeini] said, Israel must be wiped off the map.”

. “... the annihilation of the Zionist regime will come.”

. "There is no doubt that the new wave of attacks in Palestine will soon wipe off this disgraceful blot [Israel] from the face of the Islamic world."

. “The creation of the occupying regime in Israel is a strong action by the ruling arrogant American imperialist world order against the world of Islam.
