When you buy that many planes, do they have a punch-card like sub shops or pizza shops do, where every 20th one is free?

Supposedly American Airlines bought so many McDonell Douglas MD-80's that every third plane they got was free.

Without a doubt - though, the government is still retaining 28% of Aer Lingus.

I figured any large order would reflect some sort of volume discount, but I'd be surprised to learn that M-D had that large a profit margin built into one plane to be able to give away every third one.

They didn't, but AA bought hundreds and kept the lines moving. Between the MD-80's AA bought and the ones they inherited from TWA, they have about 300.
