Perhaps both Begalla and Clinton forgot, for a moment, how most Americans reacted to Al Gore's foolish-looking efforts to "bully" in a 2000 debate by invading George Bush's personal space. Aside from exhibiting extremely poor manners, it showed lack of control insecurity about himself as a man.
Future President Bush, on the other hand remained calm and continued with the dignity of a future President.
At the time, several writers, including moderate and liberal observers, commented negatively on his actions.
Begalla, for one, was not bashful about criticizing Gore's invasion of Bush's space as "goofy." Seems he has a different standard for Clinton.
On Sept. 29, 2004, CNN's Kyra Phillips' interview with Paul Begala and Tucker Carlson went like this:
"PHILLIPS: I know. Well, look at this one -- number four, we've named this one: hands off the merchandise, OK? And here's the rule: "Other than a handshake at start of the debates, the candidates are not to approach each other."
"Now, what's the deal? Do you think they'd poke each other or bonk each other over the head? You know, bite off someone's ear, Paul?
"BEGALA: You know, Kyra, in 2000, Vice President Gore did have this sense that he should invade then-Governor Bush's physical space. And he did get a little close. I think it looked a little goofy, and Bush just kind of brushed him back with a withering glance. He kind of stopped in the middle of his answer, sort of looked at Gore like what are you doing here in my space, and then went back to his answer. I love Al Gore, but I thought it looked kind of goofy.
"So, maybe they're trying to prevent any kind of invading the other guy's personal space.
"CARLSON: Well, of course. And in 2000, I think all of American could sympathize with Bush. How would you like it if Al Gore loomed into your personal space? It would scare the hell out of you, and it hurt Gore."
In October 2000, Richard Goldstein, in the Village Voice opined:
"In the second debate, Gore strained to be polite, a pose that seems frightening in an angry man. Finally, he came out swinging, but he went too far, moving into Bush's space. This was the classic response of a man caught between compensation and depression. In a president, that's far more disturbing than inauthenticity—the label Republicans have tried to stick on Gore—because it suggests an inconstancy at the core."
And, on October 19, 2000, Peggy Noonan pegged the foolishness of such Clintonian attempts at intimidation:
Noonan: "But the key moment, to me, was when Mr. Gore, who was supposed to be perched on his little stool, decided to get up and walk toward Mr. Bush as Mr. Bush answered a question--the invading-his-space moment. That moment was almost an exact replica of what Bill Clinton did to poor Bob Dole in debate. It unnerved Mr. Dole and sent him scurrying back to his podium for protection.
"But Mr. Bush was not unnerved. He gave Mr. Gore a sideways double take, and the audience laughed. Mr. Menace looked foolish, Mr. Bush unfazed."
Delightfully, Mr. Wallace did the same thing to Mr. Clinton, and that "Mr. Menace" looked foolish too, while Mr. Wallace looked absolutely Presidential.
I've always wondered what their reaction would be if there were a threat against The Impeached One.
Secret Service reaction would to be to help each other out of harms way. "Duck"

What Mr. Clinton needs is an attitude adjustment, a la Hank Williams Jr.'s old song. (Not that he's ever likely to be in a position to get one, but it's a fun thing to imagine, isn't it?)
Democrats have been bullying people since the Party was founded.
It was the Party of Slavery, f'cryin'out loud.
Democrats passed the Jim Crow laws and started the Ku Klux Klan.
Bullying is why Democrats--and other assorted Leftists--love "laws with teeeeeth in them". It enables them to be lenient to those they like, severe on those they don't like--i.e. bullies.
That's one of the perks of power as far as they are concerned: You get to bully people.

Seriously, I'm trying to figure out how it's to Bubba's benefit, much less Hillary's, much less the Democrats at large, for him to have a grand-mal meltdown during a nationally televised interview, and I'm sorry, I'm just not seeing how that works.
