Yes, "some of his slave ancestors had been raped by their owners", but some likely also consented to sex with their owners. In addition, some of Rabb's non-slave ancestors were probably Africans who captured and sold African slaves, as some Africans still do, to this day. One of my ancestors, I'm proud to proclaim, was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic, the only volunteer army in history to bleed and die to free slaves that were neither relative nor compatriot.

Taking a guess--since I have no statistics--I would bet that Most blacks probably 80% who have slave ancesters have some white blood in them.You can look at America's blacks and tell them from their Nigerian cousins. His surprise is surprising. Maybe he never studied history . Like the previous poster said , many of them were probably raped , others got special favors for sex, it runs the gamut of reasons.

And no, you can't go back and change the law to make someone feel happy.

Social anthropology is a hobby of sorts of mine and I would guess that number to be between 95%-98% of American blacks (ones who can trace their ancestry to slaves). And you are right, the surprising thing is this guy's surprise - he's a pin head.

In ten thousand years, and maybe within a thousand years, most, if not all, humans will be of mixed race. Races developed because of geographic isolation.

Modern transportation and the development of the third world has been changing that dramatically.

The elimination of races probably would be a net plus for the planet. One less thing to fight about.

Thanks for including that part about consent. Obviously it's never right to own another person but it's fallacy to believe that all or even a majority of slaves were treated badly. Mistreatment of slaves is counter productive. A mistreated slave is a slave that wants to run and becomes a problem. Mistreatment leads to injuries and less productivity. A malnourished slave is unproductive.

The fact is that slaves were an enormous financial investment and I suspect an emotional one as well.

Just a reminder.

A Geneologist did studies on decendents from a prominent Zulu woman.

It was found that Pieter Botha, President of South Africa, and leader of the Oxcart Wing of the Nationalist Party was decended from her. In short, the entire reason for apartheit went down the tubes. And that was before DNA testing was routine.

Geneologies are usually falsified, to claim ancestors. Tracing decendents is much harder to falsify. As they say, Mules always claim their ancestors are horses!

Famous examples: Mahomet's decendants include one Brooke Shields as well as Queen ElizabethII. That's not counting various descendents by several very attractive young shegoats.
