"The controversial silences of Pius XII with Nazism, and later, with Communism, of John XXIII, of Vatican Council II, and of the Ostpolitik of Paul VI, had compelling reasons, and in the first place the defense of the victims of those systems themselves. But now, it is being demanded of Benedict XVI that he maintain a similar silence in regard to the new adversary of Islam: it is a silence that is often given the name of “dialogue.” "

Truth be told, Pius XII was not silent on Nazism. One need only refer to his Vatican radio addresses where he openly refers to Hitler as a force of evil, much like this present Pope has called on Islamists. It was punishable by death to listen to Vatican Radio in Nazi Germany.

Both Popes were right in their assessments, of course.

Perhaps not, but he was accused of not speaking out louder or doing more ... etc. It's the old 'damned if you do, damned if you don't' dilemna. B16 can never be accused of silence. He's generated quite an uproar.
