People on this site, for the most part, have no idea how uncomfortable most people in this nation get when you actually insist that there is a clear cut right and wrong . . . but they have no trouble saying that making them uncomfortable is wrong! And they are natural appeasers. "Moderates."

With abortion as one of the most glaring examples of how they try to blur the black and white into an indecipherable mush.

This is the best MSM article on the pope's comments published so far. It's also nicely succinct.

And they are natural appeasers. "Moderates." That's the root of it. It's fundamentally a character issue. They lack courage.

Good comment.
You have summarized what passes for discussion today for libs.
They prioritize their feelings over their thoughts because no one can contradict one's feelings, as one could debate another's thinking.
George Weigel is valuable reading for understanding Vatican matters. I'm actually surprised that the LATimes and their sister papers have published this.

I'm going to have to dust off my LA times subscription password to read this remainder of this, thus far, superb article.

When the LA Times agrees with the Pope, how far away can Armageddon be? The LA Times may have published the commentary, but George Weigel wrote a biography of John Paul II. He is something of a conservative Catholic.

The Pope was clearly talking about our LIBERAL democrats when he said: "If the West's high culture keeps playing in the sandbox of postmodern irrationalism in which there is "your truth" and "my truth" but nothing such as "the truth" the West will be unable to defend itself." The words you quoted were Weigel's characterization of one of the Pope's points, not what the Pope himself said. If you haven't had the opportunity to read the Pope's lecture, you can find it here.

I believe this speech is going to be a crucial point in history. A reference point for the counter-offensive of the post-Christian west. An all-time great moment. A rallying cry. A religious equivalent of Reagan's
"Mr. Gorbachev.......tear down this wall!!" When the initial, unthinking furore has died down, I believe that the truth of Benedict's words will hit home to many people, including Muslims. Far from inciting a holy war, I'm sure that the words of the Holy Father will in fact have the opposite effect and result in improved Muslim/Christain relations, as crazy as that sounds right now.

I suspect this is not the LA Times agreeing with Pope Benedict (which would be nice, actually) but George Weigel agreeing with Benedict (nice, too, but much more predictable.)

Thanks for your concise and I believe, accurate analysis of the import and impact of Pope Benedict's great invitation to dialogue.
