I can't really respond because, well, because I don't know the truth of it. I'm merely guessing.

That said, the Afghan War, in particular, struck me as a triumph of "transformation" -- at least as I understand the term (lighter, faster, combined arms, etc.). A conventional army simply couldn't have been brought to bear in a primitive landlocked country like Afghanistan.

In its own way, too, the Iraq War was over a lot faster than anybody anticipated.

The problem, of course, is that both wars have extended well beyond their strictly military phase. And, frankly, I anticipated that at the outset and am not at all surprised. "Insurgency" will be one of the basic themes of the War on Terror.

And it's going to take a long, long time...
