These are best used in Tornado Alley. I saw a documetary a few years back that had footage of a house with one of these built into it as a closet.
The house was kindling, but the room, the occupants and the clothes inside were untouched.
two questions... Will Fema buy them for us?
I thought Id push my two young boys in the direction of being Victoria Secrets photographers, but now Im torn.
If there isn't, I'm sure if people start buying them , the government nannys will make them put seatbelts in.
In a hurricane, storm surge is much more lethal than wind, so the things had better be airtight and pressurized, too. And, they'd better be bolted down very securely. The force exerted by moving water packs a different punch. Even if this Kevlar "room" remains secured to the structure, the house itself won't necessarily remain secured to the ground. You're going where ever the house (or what's left of it) goes, and that could be out to sea, worst case.
My dog beat ya to it.
They might make more money just flying them in and charging people for a ride in one.
And the ready made commercial is royalty free
I'm down here in the Florida Keys. There's a business owner here selling these storm proof shelters.
He's about been laughed out of the county.
Here you go, check it out:

His floats:') You don't keep it outside do you?
Great...now more people can stay at home for hurricanes...
Howdy! I'm in the Keys also and know which shelter your talking about. It is a joke around the shop :>)
They probably laughed at Noah too:')
We've all read a million times that the damage from a hurricane is from the storm surge. Wind damage is minor.
That's why all the folks in NOLA are upset with their insurance companies. They're covered for wind damage but not storm surge.
Given that, IMHO, this would be a very poor investment in hurricane-prone areas. And, to be honest, having seen, up way too close and way too personal, the incredible damage a tornado can do, this room could help. It would probably do a good job of protecting you from the wind.
But, depending on the amount, size and weight of the wind-borne debris, it could easily turn into your coffin.
6000-10000. They planning on selling 1 or 2 huh?
Wait till somebody gets pulled 500 miles into the Atlantic in their floating shelter.
It isn't THAT the wind is blowing...it's WHAT the wind is blowing.....Ron White classic...
I'd like a Home Depot bomb shelter, dig and bury. Given Iran, every house should have one.
Hah. I worked with the people and at site where this was developed. I've since changed sites and didn't realize they've taken it commercial. I remember when they moved the prototype to the test range, the frame racked, the door jambed and they couldn't open it. When they told me the cost I asked them if it wasn't cheaper just to dig a hole in the ground and they just shrugged they're shoulders.
The real danger is getting on the Arkancide list for landing on top of Hillary's sister....
