Agree--Lived through Fran in 1996, 150 miles inland. What a mess! In 2004, Frances stalled out here. Hate those Frannie named storms! ok--I hate them all.

I think you nailed it back in #540. I think they've got visions of sitting in some dingy Capitol hearing room listening to Plugs Biden give one of his 20-minute nonsensical rants dressed up as a question, and are being extra cautious.

The radar data show a gradual deterioration in the organization of Ernesto...and satellite imagery shows only very limited deep convection with the system. The upper-level low near Andros appears to be advecting dry air into the cyclone...which may account for the anemic convection. This low is forecast to move out and weaken over the next 24 hours...leaving Ernesto under light easterly shear. This would favor gradual intensification after the center clears the coasts...but the upper winds would not seem to favor rapid development. They just ain't gonna downgrade Ernesto this close to Florida, given the politics of hurricanes nowadays. And I don't blame them.

Confirming my impression that Shep Smith is an idiot.
In loss of life, Katrina is nowhere near the 1900 Galveston hurricane. Galveston Island was basically wiped clean with almost no warning - estimates of the dead range from 6,000 to over 12,000. Many were simply never heard from again, and poor record keeping makes it impossible to get a solid number. But the estimates I have heard for Katrina are in the 1500-2000 range. We should thank God fasting that it wasn't far worse.
Dollar amounts of damages are deceptive because of the difference in the value of a dollar 100 years apart - not to mention the far more sparsely populated Gulf Coast in those days.

Emergency supplies alert.
When considering buying a battery operated TV, remember that in 2009 HDTV kicks in and will make it useless. Thanks Congress.

We lived in a mobile home outside of Highlands. We evacuated to a family members house on the NW side. Coming back windows were out of high rises and downtown was a mess. Feeder roads were flooded as were many roads. She was a what? C3? My BILs house was ok but I don't think there is an area that couldn't get damaged or flooded. Just not as bad in some areas.

I read that magazine article when I was a young kid. Made a terrific and lasting impression -- the pictures that really stuck with me were the piles of bodies jumbled on the barges . . . and one of a child's hand, in rigor, sticking out from under a pile of debris. < shiver >

I bought a radio a few weeks ago from radio shack. It doesn't have a screen but I can list to local stations. It's battery operated and also has a crank. I saw some at Sam's last week that had a screen but this one will do.

My brother in Va Beach would like some rain at least.I agree with him there. We're flirting with a drought here, and I really don't want to go on water restrictions again. I'm sorry it might screw up my Labor Day weekend, because I have only had the boat out once this year, but I'll take the rain.

I'm 90 miles due north of VA Beach and we could use the rain as well............but NOT in this kind of form. I'm also not thrilled about it considering my husband works in VA Beach every day.
We didn't have it anywhere near as bad with Isabel, let alone Gaston as Moose4 and folks in the Richmond area did, but we don't forget it here either.
