You don't think they will get their very own personalized fatwa from some fruitcake imam? I do.

Don't hold it against them.
I wouldn't hold it against anybody. Nobody in his right mind would think these statements are anything other than prepared statements read under duress. They didn't reveal any state secrets. The statements aren't even effective propaganda for the enemy (and that's what these kidnappers are).

but I have trouble with the spiel that it's a "tragedy" if the poor Palestinians don't "get their story out".

I just interepreted that as a threat to try to prevent future kidnappings. It was the same argument Olaf's wife used to beg for their release.
Now, if the newsies would just pull out of there and stop giving the terrorists the legitimacy they crave...

that is why I will not judge Centanni and Olaf for what they said. I would like to think I would do differently, but the fact is I don't know and in a scary situation like that if I knew I could be freed I'd say anything with a gun to my head even though I believe differently and God knows my heart.

Agree. But, in the warped Muslim mindset, all that matters is the words out of their mouths. Heart and soul mean nothing.

And they can be dealt with by muslim discipline. If you get my drift.

"Don't be silly. In this situation your God knows what you really believe, right?"

The problem with your statement that "God really knows what you believe" is that we are to never bow our knee to another "god"; even at the point of a gun. When we look back at church history, all of Jesus' disciples were martyred for not "renouncing" Jesus as the Christ. During the protestant reformation, Huss, Wycliffe and others were martyred for not "renouncing" their beliefs.

To endure death for what we believe says to those who would kill us for it that we are confident in what we believe and know it to be true. It's a testimony to the truth.

Saw my head of with a butter knife but I'll never forsake my God.

I know they are in a tough spot, but I could NEVER denounce my God! NEVER!

Do you have any idea how sanctimonious and down right silly you sound....sitting there in the safety of your home telling us all how brave you are?

The moment I heard this news on TV I KNEW some loudmouth would be telling us what they would do in this situation. Since you need attention so badly, I'll just say...yeah, right, we all believe we....we're all in awe of you.... yada, yada, yada.

God gave most of us a brain and the ability to use it, but I see some people obiously slipped through the cracks.

I am SO happy to hear they have been released!!!...and I couldn't give a rat's behind what they said upon that release or to gain that release. There seems to be some here that would have preferred a 'Nick Berg' style ending than them reading some garbage forced upon them at gunpoint. It is WAY above my pay grade to judge them.

Centanni said himself the "conversion" was at gunpoint. I have no doubts if they had refused it would been the end of their lives, suicide in fact.

1 Corinthians 3:16-17 is pretty clear about suicide...

16Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you?
17If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him; for God's temple is sacred, and you are that temple.

I can not condemn either of these men for their obvious coerced conversion in such a situation.

Pinging my little list.

Fox news confirms they have been freed.

Great news, now I'd like to see them home with their families, eating a steak dinner.

I'm not surprised. We have our own religious zealots at FR. I've gotten attacked for some comments - told I should be excommunicated blah blah...and I teach religious education at the local Church!

I agree. I've had to think about what I'd do in such a situation. I decided that if I were ever kidnapped, I would say whatever stupid things they made me say in order to save my life, no matter how bad it might sound. I'd retract it all once I was free and in safe territory.

I would probably do the same, but where is safe territory - especially for these guys? They have high profile jobs & I don't think they will be able to denounce their conversions publicly & still do their jobs.

I'm afraid to say that I don't think there is any "safe territory" left for any of us anymore. Even here in this little hick place I call my home, muslims are all around us. If I ever had to go through such an ordeal & was lucky enough to be released & come home, I would still never feel completely "safe" to denounce what they had forced me to say.

The intelligence agencies need to keep a keen eye on these reporters when they get back in case they have been brainwashed into sleeper agents.

I don't think there's too much risk of that (as in "I don't think there's any risk of that").

That said, I do expect them to be extremely solicitous regarding All Things Islamic for the forseeable future -- at least when in the public eye. (In private, I'd expect them to get it out of their system by "emoting like sailors" about their ordeal.)

The real risk, IMO, is of Islamist "hunter-killer" teams, a la those chasing after Salman Rushdie (who have so far managed to murder several people for the "sin" of being associated with him, or working for/with him).

In their eyes, the "conversion" was legit, even though it was indeed coerced. It's not a "religion of faith", it's a religion of law. These guys make the Pharisees look like Libertarians.

The "converts" said the right words, in the right sequence, in the right language, thus, they are bona fide "converts", even it it was coerced. It's like hitting a window with a hammer. Even if you don't want to break the window, it's gonna break. Even if someone forces you to swing the hammer (i.e., gun to your head as you are commanded to "swing it NOW!"), the window will break.

So, in that cosmology, these guys are actual Muslims -- and, since they have recanted, they are now lapsed Muslims.

Being a "backslidden Muslim" (in hardcore Islamist circles) is NOT like being a "lapsed Catholic". The main difference is that there is a death penalty attached to your "apostacy". When a Muslim becomes an infidel, he must die. Period.

Now, it's been pointed out that it's only about ten percent of the Muslims in the world that are hardcore Islamists. So tell me -- what's ten percent of 1.2 billion? That's how many potential assassins there'll be, looking for an easy score by delivering Allah's judgement on these guys.

I expect they'll be having some heavy duty bodyguards. At least I hope they will. I wouldn't be surprised if they also have some career changes too. Frankly, with that many lunatics looking to kill you, all sorts of things start to look reasonable -- name change, plastic surgery, etc.

It's not like they'd be the first to come up against the jagged edge of TROP, after all.

What's just as scary are a few Christians who've posted that this forced conversion sends Centanni and Olaf straight to hell, no forgiveness, do not pass go, do not collect $200. The only thing that matters is what they read from a script.

Not much different in the two thinkings, is it?

Oh, be quiet you know thier only goal is to stop the Zionist Terror and their American Supporters, once America and Israel are gone, they will share with the entire world thier honeyed cakes, and will bend over in thier fetid mosques five times a day in a peaceful manner, while being served by slave Christians and Hindus and Bhudists (or at least their parents, as the sons of the infidels will all be janisaries, and the daughters sex slaves). That is why we must put pressure on Bush and support the resistance fighters fightinh fot palestine!!! (or just say you support them when you have a knife to your neck, or when your local buerocrats have allowed millions of them to move into your cities as in Europe).
