Maybe Martha Stewart can provide the hard fighting troops with some elegant table napkins, and Paul Newman with jars of his "Paul's Own" spaghetti sauce? when you're on deployment in the middle of a desert with no real civilized influences around, sometimes music is ALL you have to link you back to the real world. It helps, believe me it does.

I've decided that it's more of an internet phenomenon than a FReeper phenomenon. All forums seems to attract more than their share of socially maladjusted misanthropes. This seems to apply to music, technical, political, motorcycle, etc etc, forums. From what I've found, there are no exceptions. The internet is never a decent sample of humanity. Now if you were to ask me why I'd have to shrug my shoulders and confess that I really have no idea.
A great sampling could be taken from the singles/feminism/marriage threads on here. You'll find that bitter, introverted, depresses, and often down right angry males are waaaay over-represented here. Again, I'd have to shrug my shoulders if you ask why.

Those of us that grew up living at military base to base during the 50's and 60's had a rather unique education.
I was an USAF brat during that time, and you are so right!

To explain, I'm reacting not to Ms Nicks' gesture, which is fine, and is minor ,and is no better than similar and unpublicized (and often grander) gestures of many unnamed here and elsewhere, I'm reacting to the orgy of orgasms here at this small gesture of a minor forgotten celebrity now known mostly for being known, that is hardly worth noting (the gesture) in the scheme of things. That's all. Get over yourselves!

"I refuse to be pulled into the politics of war." Contrast that with Cher using soldier's helmets as a launch pad for her "Bush is going to hell" tirades. Or Franken using his USO work to buttress his anti-war position.
Stevie Nicks easily could have done something similar, and she would have received nothing but praise and support from her peers and her industry. The fact that she didn't is a good sign that she not only supports the troops, but their mission as well.

This SO ROCKS!!!! I love Stevie Nicks, am still a big fan of hers. Nothing compares to "Gypsy" or "Stand Back" or "Rhiannon" - and I was always trying to follow her fashions. She was "Goth" before "goth" became a phenomenon.
Am pleased to know she has a healthy measure of class and common sense. I dont like getting into the politics of this war either, because Im just someone who is watching it all. But I love that she is using her time and effort in music with great charity and class. Bravo, Stevie!

She has also sent baby clothes to war widows, joined bedside vigils and with the United Service Organization (USO), hopes to provide every returning soldier with a music player. She adds, "Any one of them could be my own child. You can't help falling in love with every one of them."This is why I fell in love with her, a classy Lady from...TEXAS!(gasp)

Hey, I was just reading this thread!
Gotta say, Ms. Nicks is a bit of a guilty pleasure for me (memories of the early 80s and her first couple of solo albums! sigh!) and this impresses me.
She refuses to get into the politics, and that I respect a great deal. Isn't she from a military background--like her father was military or something?

a minor forgotten celebrity now known mostly for being knownThere was nothing minor about Fleetwood Mac. They're one of the great bands in rock and roll's short history.
If it's not your thing, fine. But try not to project your indifference on to everybody else.
