Sounds like a Shiloh Shepherd to me, also known as King Shepherds. Huge, long-haired, bred to act protective but be sweet with family members. They are very different from my ideal GSD, the sheep tending dog. Incidentally, the tending-style GSD will keep children out of pools, off the road, etc. much better than any guard dog and much more gently than any border collie, lol!

Actually, the charity I volunteer with does not allow minors to foster dogs. But we can, and do, volunteer with our parents' foster dogs.

Have you ever considered that if your child were buried beneath a pile of rubble in a disaster site, an American Staffordshire Terrier or other supposedly vicious dog could be the one to save him? I am not the only person who serves others with bad rep dogs. Some "pit bulls" are service dogs for disabled owners, and many are certified SAR dogs who train extensively to protect complete strangers.

The dog was beautiful. It wouldnt have been so bad had the woman been uglier. and by the looks of the dog i would say that breeding a pitbull with a bull mastiff would come close to creating a canary dog

Its a very sweet breed if people are sweet to it. Just like some people posted, the owners seem a little shady...ex-con, landscaper, 800,000 dollar home. Why are we blaming the dog here? This woman or another owner may have mistreated this dog. I read before that neighbors stated that the dog was often left tied up to a tree outside. Not the best way to treat a dog that can actually become higher than you on the food chain.

I'd agree that a Lab or a Golden would be a good place to start. Typically the breeds are people-oriented, friendly, good with kids, and tolerant of mistakes (like pulled ears and stepped-on tails).

BUT -- there are touchy, aggressive and difficult Labs and Goldens, mostly from the field trial lines in both cases.

It is much more important to buy from a good hobby breeder who values temperament and health as well as conformation. Not a pet shop, not a backyard breeder, but somebody who's active in the local breed association and/or a performance club, who's DOING something with the dogs and takes their quality seriously. You find them by going to breed clubs, dog shows, agility trials, obedience trials, etc. and talking to everybody who'll talk to you.

If you find a good hobby breeder you'll find that THEY are interviewing YOU to see if you're a fit owner for one of THEIR pups. And that's the way it should be.

Remember it was 2 Prensa Canarios who killed that woman in San Francisco.

I still think of that poor woman who was killed by the two Prensa Canarios in the hallway of her building. On the floor while they bite and mauled her until dead.
