In the spring of 1941, Nazi Croatia also annexed Srem (lat. Sirmium), now one of the three regions making up the Serbian Province of Voivodina. In essence, the eastern border of the puppet state of Croatia was, throughout WWII, only a few miles from downtown Belgrade (in the town of Zemun, now one of the 16 municipalities/boroughs of the City of Belgrade).

While the atrocities were not as widespread as they were elsewhere (Slavonia, Lika, Dalmatia, Bosnia, Hercegovina...), numerous massacres and forced deportations of Serbs had taken place during the war years.

What's the problem with this mass grave. The ABIH admit the column lost some 2,000 men 10 years ago in an ambush in the exact same area and now some 1,000 odd have been dug up.
