Five guys at $500 each to Mississippi = $2500
Rental Car in Mississippi = $400
Rental Van $400
Gasoline $300
It only sucks when you get more than four or five people on the trip.

"I've often wondered if hotels would be cool with you shipping a box of stuff to yourself in advance of your stay."
Of course. People do it all the time. I'm not sure about a Motel 6, but if you're staying in them, you can replace everything you own at a thrift store for a few bucks, anyhow.
Just call the hotel and tell them to expect a package for you. Give them your name and check-in date, and they'll be happy to help you out.
Sheesh...has nobody ever traveled before. I ship stuff to destination hotels all the time. I'm not putting a box of samples on the plane with me. What a pain!

Sorry to hear that.
Talk about unexpected consequences!
Grrrrrrrrrrrrr!
Inconvenience tens of millions, rather than a few thousand foreign muslims...

Depends on how well you play, I guess. My trombone's lousy. I'm better on euphonium.

Maybe this will make some people start checking the steamer trunks they keep trying to stuff into the overhead above my seat.

It's been a few years since I heard Greenburg's tip on "traveling light".
Of course a lot of the time he's staying at top hotels...but he
said to work this deal with the hotel concierge (sp?).
I suppose that means giving a bit of tip would be in order.
But if the service is worth it, it's nice to know it is available to
make travel more bearable.

Those things on your daughter's chest - they're not just sweater decorations
That might be funny to you, but some women aren't able to nurse. I will be carrying bottles of expressed milk with me on a plane in a few weeks.
That said. Bottles are allowed.

Actually, do you know how many times I've gotten to a destination and my checked saline solution has been empty or near empty? Must be something about the pressure (or lack there of?)

This is somewhat of a relief. My friend called and told me I couldn't bring a laptop, or even a book with me on my flight tomorrow.

Yep. My 74 yo mother is searched every time she flies - every time ! - while my father age 76 stands by waiting. Go figure that one out - she looks so terrorist-like with her needlepoint bag at the ready.

Agreed. I calculate that trips of about 1,000 to 1,200 miles each way are about a break-even on cost. If I figure the hassle factor of flying is worth $800 round trip ($400 each way, then any trip up to 2,000 to 2,400 miles is a break-even.
Even with the current gasoline prices. Naturally, you should take steps to make your automobile travel as productive as possible, business-wise. Like, carry a laptop capable of high-speed Ethernet and high-speed wireless. Maybe even get a Blackberry, if you can trust yourself to use it safely while drive.

I've often wondered if hotels would be cool with you shipping a box of stuff to yourself in advance of your stay. I very much doubt that hotels would be able to handle it if a large percentage of travellers pre-shipped their luggage.

That's entirely feasible, but airplane cabins are VERY dry and have almost no humidity. My eyes dry out easily, and I need saline solution if those contacts are in, which they always are because they correct my vision far better than glasses can. I have a contact lens case that holds the plastic lens box and a teensy little bottle for saline solution - it holds literally about 30 drops. Of salt water.
But I can't bring it on now.
Life's a b**ch but it could be worse. You could stay home.

Regardless of the stated cause I'd not be sorry to see all carry on stuff banned. The most irritating thing I experienced when I had to travel a lot was the stupid carry ons that people insisted on bringing. I truly think they would have brought the kitchen sink had they been remodeling at their destination. Things that come to mind: skis, golf clubs, and altho I didn't see any I'm sure there were bowling balls, and that's just the sports stuff.

Yup, she has status. They are saying on their website that the time to get thru security is one and one half hours.
Hopefully by Monday morning they will have sufficient security lines opened.
There are times when DIA is slower than molasses, for no reason!!

A big sign should be hung over the security checkpoints at every airport: "Checkpoint, Courtesy of Islam".
