Khaibar: a missile's name signals Iran's genocidal intentions
By Micah D. Halpern August 8, 2006

In the West, especially in the United States, we do not pay enough attention to symbols and to the cultural importance of symbols. We pay attention to status symbols, but we totally ignore cultural symbols.

We live in the world of the bottom line. We have little time and even less patience for nuance. The value of terms and the symbolic value of actions are almost totally lost on our culture. Maybe symbolism is a lost art. Maybe it is a study relegated to university seminars. Maybe, just maybe, it is a major oversight on our parts, a major gap in our knowledge bank, another example of the way in which we think of ourselves -- as the most powerful and important people in the world.

Not so in the Middle East.

In Arabic a metaphor is more than a collection of words. It can be a prophecy or a blessing. It can be a curse. In Arab cultures a symbol speaks volumes, only wordlessly. Symbols are ideas, they dictate behaviors, they tell stories. They are lore. They carry religious resonance.

I am a student of history. Imagine my shock when I learned the name of the new and improved Iranian missile that Hezbollah is shooting at Israel, a missile that goes further and causes more damage than any missile that has come before it, a super missile. The Khaibar.

Why has the Hezbollah chosen to name a missile Khaibar? Because Khaibar is not merely a name, Khaibar delivers a message. When the Arab and Muslim worlds hear the word Khaibar a story of mythical proportions is conjured up before them. Israel is familiar with the story.

Khaibar was the name of an ancient town. As the story unfolds in the Koran, it was a town predominantly inhabited by Jews. Mohammed the prophet targeted Jews. He tried to convert them in order to show off the success of his new theophany, his new revelation -- that there is but one God and he, Mohammed, is his prophet.

Mohammed gave the Jews of Khaibar the option to leave the town taking with them all their belongings. The Jews declined to leave. Mohammed gave the Jews of Khaibar the option to just leave. Again, the Jews declined. Mohammed massacred the Jews of Khaibar. All of them. The story of Khaibar is the story of Sodom and Gemmorah, only Mohammed style.

The name Khaibar resonates with hatred and the mass murder of Jews.

Every Arab and every Muslim who has read the Koran realizes the true meaning behind this choice of name. Naming a missile Khaibar is a metaphor for the struggle between the Arab world and Israel. It is a metaphor suggesting the ultimate end to this struggle. The Arab world is telling us, the West, that this battle is not about Southern Lebanon, it is about the very destruction of Israel.

We must not miss the symbolic value of this message. The dream of seeing Israel destroyed resonates up and down the streets and alleys and hallways of the Arab and Muslim worlds today.

When does the Arab world band together? Never to offer praise and rejoice because of the good that has happened to them, only to rejoice because bad has happened to someone else. The Arab world gathers together in hatred. They gather because of the United States and because of Israel. The Muslim world is galvanized because of the story line in a movie, the lyrics of a song, because of caricatures in a newspaper. They are moved to action because of perceived insult and evil, principally insults and evils interpreted to be hurled at them by the West.

It is this destructive side of a once great tradition that will be the cause and the downfall of the Muslim world. Rather than rejoicing at the wondrous advances of the modern world, rather than incorporating the scientific and technical wonders available to us today, the Muslim world opts to deprive itself by shutting out all glimpses of modernity. That is not true ancient Muslim tradition. During the Golden Age when Islam was a significant world cultural force Muslims lent and even borrowed ideas in order to enhance their own society.

Today the majority of the Arab world suffers from abject poverty and illiteracy. The energy spent on propagandizing about how evil the West is, how devilish the United States is and how dangerous Israel is would be well spent instead teaching children how to read and write giving the future of the Arab world the chance to one day become scientists and researchers and economists. Today, the greatest brain-drain in the world is out of the Arab world.

Historically, the desire to destroy has been a simple tool used in order to galvanize a society against a common enemy. But history marches on. Societies can make transitions, they can be resuscitated, societies and even religions can make the move forward. Russia did it and while the Russians are still puzzling out their future, it is clear that the new Russia will not be a society of destruction.

Signs and symbols pointing to a future for the Muslim and Arab worlds are negative. I, for one, am not hopeful.

The Story of a Dead Girl

----------------------------------
Lena Polyakova was killed during the storming of 'Nord-Ost'. The authorites tried to hide her body, and she was buried in secret. The Moscow city prosecutor seems to be more worried about the actions of the lawyer for the 'Nord-Ost' hostages than anything else.
----------------------------------

The 'Nord-Ost' story continues. The first thing that we remember was the silence, or, alternatively, the unconvincing lie about the number of hostages who were killed during the storming of the theatrical center.

Later, it became clear that it was not just the terrorists and dextrous representatives of the police and special forces who were guilty of the tragedy, but many journalists. Last Friday the topic of the media's fault was personified in the resignation of Boris Jordan. As you may recall, NTV 'incorrectly' reported on the events at 'Nord-Ost'.

Now the prosecutor's office has decided to investigate Trunov, the lawyer for the former 'Nord-Ost' hostages, in spite of the laws protecting counsel. In other words, since the real terrorists are far away, they must 'wipe out' those who are closer.

With regards to all of this, I would like to tell our readers a very simple story. The story of a dead girl.

Unfortunately, the person who knows THE WHOLE STORY is dead. He, whom we shall call him 'D.B.' agreed to make public this story, but never succeeded. He was not able to tell me a lot, so I must tell of that which he did.

Thus, on the list of the dead is Alena Polyakova. We looked for this girl and her mother, Olga Polyakova, beginning on October 28th (2002), at D.B.'s request. They were the wife and daughter of a friend of his.

D.B. drove to all the hospitals and morgues specified in official reports. We, in turn, called them all. Mother and daughter Polyakova were not on any of the official lists.

Quickly understanding that the victims were transported to WHEREVER POSSIBLE, we changed our tactics. The editors here telephoned ALL the hospitals and morgues in Moscow. We were successful in one instance: in the intensive care ward of Hospital No. 68 we located Olga Polyakova. At this point Hospital No. 68 was NOT on any of the lists.

D.B. tried to use his connections (which he had a lot of) to try and transfer Olga Polyakova to Central Clinical Hospital. He was refused, and was told that it was FORBIDDEN to send 'Nord-Ost' hostages to Central.

Lena Polyakova still remained unaccounted for. Once again we called ALL the hospitals and morgues, and once again D.B. knocked about ALL the hospitals and morgues. Suddenly he phoned and said that there was still one place where Lena could be. In his words, a very high-ranking acquaintance told him that the bodies of those killed during the storming of the theater were at the certain military unit in Moscow. D.B. agreed to be taken there, but categorically refused to bring me along. He was granted permission to go alone, at night.

In the morning he phoned and told me that there was no need to look any further.

The military unit turned out to be one of the military hospitals used for high-ranking members of the command staff, located at Sokolniki. D.B. drove there at night. When he left, they told me, one could not bear to look at him. Alena was there, along with, at a minimum, nine bodies.

The girl had a gunshot wound. The pathologist assured him that the wound was in itself not fatal. On the other hand, does a 12-year-old child need much of a wound?

Problems later arose. Officially the girl did not exist - she was not on any of the hostage lists. "Some of the hostages," the Moscow city prosecutor stated cynically. "Went home on their own." Alena Polyakova was not in any morgue or hospital, officially. That is to say, the girl had ceased to be. Even her body vanished, officially.

D.B. would not give me details, he would not not say what favors he called in so that he could get custody of the girl's body. This, however, was only half the problem - NOW SHE COULD NOT BE BURIED!

For a burial one needs a death certificate. It was impossible to get one, because the certificate must have a cause of death. The girl had a gunshot would, so this means that the police and prosecutor's office had to be notified. Generally speaking, after 'Nord-Ost' no one wanted anything to do with this, not even for money. A death certificate was eventually purchased somewhere in Kazan.

They went to the Troekurovsky cemetary to bury the girl. As D.B. told me, it was an awful funeral - only nine people, and the coffin was too large for the little girl.

D.B.'s heart could not handle the awful pressure. Within a month he passed away.

By the way, those who were interested in this story COULD NOT FIND Alena Polyakova in the registry of the Troekurovsky cemetary or its crematorium.

This story is a ghastly one, and an everyday occurrence in Russia. It is so commonplace that the prosecutor's office is more interested in other maters, such as the lawyer of those who spent three days in the theater hall with Alena Polyakova, but, unlike her, survived.

P.S. This sory would be incomplete without a certain addition.

In principle I do not expect any reaction from 'up above'. Indifference to the fates of the common people by those 'above' has been repeatedly demonstrated.

As it turns out, there are many people who are upset that the 'Nord-Ost' story did not die down, was not forgotten, but 'has been inflated' by the fact that we play on this tragedy.

I understand that only those who had relatives and loved ones among the hostages can personally discuss the loss of almost one-and-a-half hundred people.

The rest of the public quietly sat in their easy chairs at home in Russia or abroad, and drank coffee while they observed the details of the assault, and the dead bodies. They chatted about this on the telephone or at the work, confident that this could never happen to them. They watched the series. The media story. They believed the media stories written to entertain them. After the hostages were shown on TV, carried out in the arms of special forces soldiers, the public ceased to be interested. Why ruin a happy ending?

That this their right. Their hope.

Those who sailed on the last voyage of the submarine Kursk also hoped to return. Those who lay to sleep in their homes on Guryanov street and Kashirsk highway also thought that they would awaken the next day. Those who went to watch 'Nord-Ost' also thought that after play they would happily return home...

Interesting, are there that many who think that this will never touch them?

Yes, there are that many, all over the world.

Lena's story does not surprise me, but it upsets me.

Thank you, Peter, for another chapter in this report that needs to be told.

Fire rips through Islamic Center near San Diego
ap on Riverside Press Enterprise ^ | 8/17/06 | AP

EL CAJON

A fire ripped through an Islamic center early Thursday morning, causing $2 million in damages before it was put out, officials said.

The three-alarm fire at the Kurdish Community Islamic Center was reported just after 2 a.m. and burned for more than an hour before firefighters from 15 different crews extinguished it, said Monica Zech, a spokeswoman for the El Cajon Fire Department.

"When they got here, there was heavy smoke coming from the building and then the fire broke through the roof and flames were shooting through the roof," Zech said. "It's pretty much a total loss."

The cause of the fire in this east San Diego suburb was unknown. Investigators were unable to search for clues inside the building because it was unstable, Zech said. Instead, they used fire truck ladders to get an aerial view of the inside of the 800,000-square-foot community center, she said.

Arson investigators from the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and the FBI were on the scene.

The FBI would become involved if it was determined that the fire was a hate crime, Zech said.

Members of the community center arrived early Thursday for morning prayer, only to find the center in ashes. Zech said the center's owner was out of town.

Pilot injured in Mojave plane crash [Photo of plane]

MOJAVE - A small plane going through aerobatic maneuvers crashed about 2 miles north of Mojave Airport on Wednesday afternoon, leaving the pilot alive but in critical condition. An Extra EA-300, the two-seat plane is one of several that have been used to accompany the White Knight and SpaceShipOne craft built by Burt Rutan's Scaled Composites company at Mojave Airport.

The plane came down north of Mojave Airport's north perimeter fence shortly after 1 p.m.

An indentation in the desert dirt marked the spot of initial impact. From there, a trail of broken sage brush and dented debris led to the fuselage of the black-and-red aircraft.

A thin layer of dust covering the plane's tail number - N12DW - was wiped clean in places, supposedly from the hands of emergency responders who helped remove the pilot from the scene.

A helmet and a black shoe lay haphazardly in the dirt next to the cockpit. The engine of the plane had continued moving south after the rest of the craft had crashed to a halt, and a splintered stub was all that remained of the plane's wooden propeller.

Kern County deputies at the scene pointed to a patch of charred dirt and explained that the collision had sparked a small brush fire.

Deputies were at the site for hours after impact, waiting for representatives from Federal Aviation Administration to arrive from their Los Angeles office to investigate the scene.

An employee at Scaled Composites said the company was not releasing any information about the crash until relatives of the pilot had been notified of the situation.

Ian Gregor, spokesman from the Federal Aviation Administration office in Los Angeles, said, "The aircraft was destroyed, and the pilot, who was the only occupant, suffered serious injuries."

Top al Qaeda Man In Pakistan Nabbed
ABC ^ | 8/17/06 | Gretchen Peters and Habibullah Khan

Gretchen Peters and Habibullah Khan Report:

A senior al Qaeda commander allegedly tied to the London airplane bomb plot has been arrested in Pakistan, Pakistani intelligence and law enforcement officials have told ABC News. Matiur Rehman, one of the most wanted men in Pakistan, is known to have met with the alleged plot ringleader Rashid Rauf, according to the officials.

Rehman’s capture could provide the most important leads in months to the whereabouts of Al Qaeda’s top two leaders, Osama bin Laden and Ayman al Zawahiri. Rehman was believed to be in frequent contact with Zawahiri.

Rehman was taken into custody in the southern Punjab city of Bawalpur, the same town where alleged London plot ringleader Rashid Rauf was arrested last week. ABC News saw a copy of the police report on Rehman, with an attached copy of his photo.

Pakistani officials told ABC News earlier that 29-year Rehman was known to be planning a terror spectacular to mark the fifth anniversary of the 9/ll attacks, and the London plot may have been it.

ABC News consultant Alexis Debat, a terrorism expert at the Nixon Center in Washington D.C., says, "[Rehman] is the interface between al Qaeda's leadership and thousands, if not tens of thousands, of Pakistani militants who are able to provide the muscle for al Qaeda's operations not only in Pakistan but around the world."

A new study of 115 Iranian school textbooks concludes that Iran is preparing its children for war, and is willing to risk massive casualties for the opportunity to defeat America in a world-wide cataclysmic confrontation.

“Iran’s is a war curriculum,” the study said. “Iran prepares its school children to fight the West – America in particular – as an indispensable complementary phase of the Islamic Revolution.”

From the Fifth grade on, Iran’s revolutionary regime portrays itself in government textbooks “as the champion of all non-Western nations, Muslim and non-Muslim, in a fateful struggle against Western hegemony in the world,” the study concluded.

In the vision of Iran’s leaders that is indoctrinated into young Iranians from an early age, “the Muslims, and the world oppressed nations in general, should wage a global war against the infidel oppressors, especially America,” the study reports, using language drawn directly from the Iranian textbooks.

Prepared by scholars Arnon Groisse and Navid Toobian of the Center for Monitoring the Impact of Peace in Jerusalem, the study will be released in the United States by the American Jewish Congress.*

This is the first comprehensive look at how the Islamic Republic of Iran has attempted to indoctrinate two generations of children since seizing power from the Shah in 1979. Until now, many Middle East experts and intelligence analysts who have studied the rants of leaders such as Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad or Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei have pooh-poohed their anti-Western tirades as mere made-for-the-masses propaganda.

Charter flight triggers terror alert at NATO base in Poland

Charter flight triggers terror alert at NATO base in Poland

Warsaw, Aug. 17 (AP): A planeload of Polish tourists got a fright when their Turkish pilot mistakenly landed at a NATO air base, sparking a terrorist alert, officials said on Thursday.

The pilot of the chartered plane disregarded instructions from air traffic controllers and touched down at the Krzesiny base near Poznan late Wednesday instead of at the city's Lawica airport, about 15 kilometers (10 miles) away.

Slawomir Orlowski, a spokesman for the military airport, said the unexpected landing triggered an anti-terror procedure, with troops scrambling to surround the aircraft.

Anti-terrorist police moved in to check the crew and the passengers, he said. Three hours later, the plane was allowed to fly to the civilian airport for regular arrival procedure.

``The people were under great stress because the crew was not able to communicate to them what was going on,'' Orlowski said. ``The pilot's English was not very good.''

Mom at wheel as teen shoots
Post-Trib ^ | 8/18/06 | Lori Caldwell

GARY — Neighborhood children could count on Jermaine Martin’s generosity when the ice cream truck rolled through Marshalltown.

At 27 years old, the mentally handicapped man rarely strayed far from his front yard, but welcomed visitors of all ages. So it was easy for his killer to find Martin on Wednesday afternoon.

Police arrested a 15-year-old they say shot Martin with an SKS semiautomatic rifle as the teen’s mother drove past the victim’s house, slowing down to allow her son to fire. Police said a 16-year-old boy who was in the back seat of the car also was arrested.

Martin, known as “Bobo,” was shot in the back shortly before 2 p.m. and collapsed face down on his lawn.

“Bobo never hurt anyone in his life. When the ice cream truck came, he bought for everyone,” neighbor Crystal Boykin said.

His mother’s friend had a towel pressed against the wound when police and medics arrived.

“I felt him take that last (breath),” Joyce Davis said as she watched police string crime scene tape around the yard. “This is just senseless.”

Witnesses said shots were fired from a blue four-door car, which police located almost immediately after the shooting.

The car was found on Central Avenue about one-half mile west of Wisconsin Street. The driver was identified as the suspect’s mother and was arrested there. An hour later, Detective Sgt. Thomas Branson had her son and the 16-year-old in custody.

Branson and Detectives Cpl. Thomas Decanter, Cpl. Anthony Titus and Lorenzo Davis were questioning witnesses and suspects Wednesday evening.

Dozens of residents gathered in groups up and down Wisconsin Street to watch police work and speculate on what happened.

“We’ve called police about him I don’t know how many times because the guys were always trying to rob him. The police never came,” Boykin said.

Martin was often hassled, but Boykin said police dispatchers didn’t take her calls seriously.

“They told me I was calling trying to get the police jumped. But now look what it led to,” she said.

Top Iran Official: Israel, U.S. Should Fear Our Missiles in Tel Aviv

The following are excerpts from a speech by Ahmad Khatami, member of
the
Iranian Assembly of Experts, which aired on the Iranian News Channel
(IRINN)
on August 15, 2006.

*Clip # 1238 - Top Iranian Official Ahmad Khatami: Israel and the U.S.
Should Fear the Day Our Missiles Land in the Heart of Tel Aviv

Ahmad Khatami: This victory was promised in the Koran: "The party of
Allah
must triumph." On this occasion, I want to tell Bush and Israeli Prime
Minister Olmert that they should learn a lesson from this shameful
defeat.
They should not bare their fangs, expose their stings, or make threats
against Islamic Iran. They should learn a lesson from the fact that a
single
party [Hizbullah] has turned their days into dark nights. If they
decided to
display the slightest aggression against Islamic Iran, they should bear
in
mind that the missiles of the Lebanese Hizbullah, with a range of 70
kilometers, have turned Israel into a ghost-country. They should fear
the
day that our missiles, with a range of 2,000 kilometers, land in the
heart
of Tel Aviv. Therefore, we hope that Bush and Israeli Prime Minister
Olmert
have learned the necessary lesson. They should know that playing with
Islam
is like playing with a lion's tail.

Terminal Evacuated After Bomb-Sniffing Dog's Reaction

CEREDO, W.Va. -- A West Virginia airport terminal was evacuated Thursday afternoon after a bomb-sniffing dog reacted to a bottle filled with a liquid in a passenger's luggage, an airport official said.

A screener noticed the bottle in a woman's carryon bag as she prepared to board a flight to Charlotte, N.C., said Tri-State Airport Authority President Jim Booton.

The woman was detained for questioning, commercial airline service was temporarily suspended, and about 100 passengers and airport employees were ordered to leave the terminal, Booton said.
At least one flight was diverted to Charleston's Yeager Airport, about 60 miles away.

The FBI is investigating.

Authorities Warning Women Not to Wear Gel Bras As Worries of Possible Female Bombers Increase

August 16, 2006 11:19 AM

Richard Esposito and Anna Schecter Report:

Ap_airport_060816_nrU.S. authorities are advising women not to wear gel bras on airplanes as information developed in the foiled London plot points to an expanding role for women in smuggling explosives on to an aircraft.

Authorities at Scotland Yard are questioning a husband and wife, suspects in the London terror plot, about allegations that they were planning to use their baby's bottle to hide a liquid bomb.

Police in the U.K. have recovered baby bottles containing peroxide, including some with false bottoms, from a recycling center close to the homes of some of the arrested suspects.

The use of female suicide bombers has been successful in previous airplane attacks.

When two airplanes went down within minutes of each other in Russia in 2004, officials immediately suspected a terrorist connection. It was later learned that the two suicide bombers were Chechen women. They had both been detained in the airport before boarding their flights but managed to convince airline officials using a little cash and charm to let them on board. Ninety people were killed.

"Black Widows," as they are called by the Russian media, are Chechen women who kill themselves to avenge the deaths of their husbands or other male family members.

There are numerous other examples of the use of female operatives in terrorist operations. Two women with explosive belts were among the hostage takers during the siege of a middle school in Beslan, Russia. Over 300 people were killed; half of them were children.

A woman had planned to blow herself up with her husband in an attack at a wedding in a hotel in Amman, Jordan last year that killed over 50 people. His explosive belt worked, while hers did not.

Maddy Sauer contributed to this report.
