Some of my favorite quotes come from Colonel Jeff Cooper:

“The will to survive is not as important as the will to prevail... the answer to criminal aggression is retaliation.”

“One cannot legislate the maniacs off the street... these maniacs can only be shut down by an armed citizenry. Indeed bad things can happen in nations where the citizenry is armed, but not as bad as those which seem to be threatening our disarmed citizenry in this country at this time.”

We continue to be exasperated by the view, apparently gaining momentum in certain circles, that armed robbery is okay as long as nobody gets hurt! The proper solution to armed robbery is a dead robber, on the scene.

"One bleeding-heart type asked me in a recent interview if I did not agree that 'violence begets violence.' I told him that it is my earnest endeavor to see that it does. I would like very much to ensure—and in some cases I have—that any man who offers violence to his fellow citizen begets a whole lot more in return than he can enjoy." - Cooper vs. Terrorism

We are somewhat amused by the hysteria manifest in the press at the suggestion by Gordon Liddy that if one is menaced by bad guys (particularly the ninja) one is wise to shoot for the head. That statement has got a whole bunch of journalists and commentators bleeding from the nose. One wonders why it should. Where else should you shoot a man if he is probably wearing an armored vest? If you decide to shoot you have made the big decision. Where you place your shot is merely a technical matter. - Jeff Cooper's Commentaries, Independence Issue, 1995

The French are sawed-off sissies who eat snails and slugs and cheese that smells like people's feet. Utter cowards who force their own children to drink wine, they gibber like baboons even when you try to speak to them in their own wimpy language.

I once had a company commander we called “Iron Mike”. He thought it was a compliment denoting his iron will and discipline. Actually it came from the term used for the auto pilot on a ship – no matter the course that is set, the ship will maintain it, regardless of dangers ahead. No thought required or allowed by an Iron Mike.

The first episode of "Welcome Back Kotter" (yes - aged nicely, thanks) included a trade between the teacher (Kotter played nicely by Gabe Kaplan) and Vinnie Barbarino (where I first learned to loathe John Ravolta). Kaplan was discussing how insults had changed over the years since he was in school. He used to say things like, "Your mother wears army boots." Barbarino's reply? "Up your nose with a rubber hose."

Not sure that adds much, but that's what the thread made me think about.

BTW: that was the second to the last episode of "Kotter" I watched. Kaplan was good.

Shalom.

My favorite (after someone accidentally, or not, rips one)

"Ah, your voice has changed, but your breath is still the same."

Or this one

"Some people were hit with the ugly stick. You were hit with the entire tree."

"People who enjoyed a merely superficial acquaintance with my nephew Archibald were accustomed to set him down as just an ordinary pinheaded young man. It was only when they came to know him better that they discovered their mistake. Then they realized that his pinheadedness, so far from being ordinary, was exceptional. Even at the Drones Club, where the average intellect is hot high, it was often said of Archibald that, had his brain been constructed of silk, he would have been hard put to it to find sufficient material to make a canary a pair of cami-knickers."

P.G. Wodehouse.  Fiction, but one of my favorites.

Dorothy Parker and a young actress both approached a doorway at the same moment. The actress stepped back and said to Parker, "Age before beauty."

Parker sailed through the door saying, "Pearls before swine."

My personal favorite:

On conceit...

Little-minded peoples' thoughts move in such small circles that five minutes conversation gives you an arc long enough to determine their whole curve.

An arc in the movement of a large intellect does not differ sensibly from a straight line.
