My take on Mel's Mess:
I think he is haunted by demons that tend to gather around super creative people, especially those who have no firm grounding (his Catholicism tends to come and go - I can relate to that). His alcoholism and other self-destructive behaviors are out of control.
This is a cry for help, one that was sent out in a way that couldn't be missed.
And the media, looking for several years now for ways to neutralize him, are not going to let this drop until they've beaten him into a Commie.
His dad's stranger ideas gave him the tools. I doubt he has too many solid political ideas, he's too flighty and too driven artistically to home in on that sort of logic.
His good looks are part of his curse. People are too busy THUDDING all around him to take him seriously, which just encourages him to act out to keep their attention long enough to get his ideas out there.
He was probably at his most focused (and happiest) working on the Passion of the Christ. And they will crucify him forever for it's success. (That may not be a pun, time will tell.)
I hope he goes far away from Hollywood, takes up painting or recycled sculpturing, or some creative outlet. If he can keep his family near, develop a few non-Hollywood freindships and redirect his energy, he could save his life, his marriage and his soul. If not, well, the media will make endless movies based on his biography. :-/

I think we're in trouble when it comes to the generations who have been steeped in hatred. I really don't know how we are going to fix this. You have all the Lebanese, the Palestinians, the Arabs in general. They have been systematically brainwashed for years. It's going to take a massive 24/7 indoctrination to get that out of their minds.

Last year, we had long, long 24/7 threads for Katrina and Rita last year..and it really seemed to help any freepers in the path.
