I remember the kick off meeting for CVN-77 (G.W. Bush) at Newport News, VA. I was one of two representatives for my company, a major subcontractor. First guy up is the program manager. He points out that we launch on the equinox high tide, there are no waivers. Last waiver was for the Battle of Jericho.

The next guy up is safety. Safety runs the shipyard. You got 100,000 tons of steel hoisted on overhead cranes, nuclear reactors, high voltage, high pressure, high temperature, more gruesome ways to get killed than in a Friday the Thirteenth flick. What does he talk about? You guessed it: Laser pointers. No laser pointers in the shipyard. If you bring them in, they will be confiscated.

I felt much better knowing that.

You most certainly haven't been zapped for more than a few seconds with a green laser -- unless you are indeed a touch typist.

The danger for pilots is "flash blindness" -- temporary blindness and distraction that can cause loss of control of the aircraft. It isn't necessary to burn their eyes out of their sockets to create a dangerous situation.

Does that mean my husbands lazer level is a weapon?

If he beats you over the head with it, then probably yes.

I've googled for reports of death or harm, or blindness from a lazer pen. Could NOT find a single word about any harm or death from lazer pens. People, and L.E. needs to quit being such big babies . Seems like a B.B. gun would be much more of a hazard! No doubt.

Are they charging him with criminal possession of a weapon for having a laser pointer?

If you use a baseball bat as a weapon you can be charged with being in possession of a weapon for having it in your possession.

If you are hitting some baseballs to your kids in your yard, and not threatening anyone, then it's not a weapon.

The situation often defines if something is a weapon just like you can be charged with possessing thieves tools if you have items in your possession if you break into some place with them even though those items are illegal to own in and of themselves.

Heck, even a kitchen knife is a weapon.

You know, I think people that operate machinery weighing thousands of pounds that hand suspended in mid-air just need to suck it up.

I know a guy who has a green laser pointer the size of a large pen that can be seen for miles. I have little doubt that you could temporarily blind the driver of a vehicle with it.

They can be very bright. When he got his they were also very expensive. It's been few years but I believe he paid somewhere in the $200 - $300 range for it.

They may very well be cheap now.

Your googleplex garbage is just generalised info, mostly about the good use of lazers (not hand held lazers) by doctors. I've seen NO name of anybody blinded or harmed by a hand held lazer pen....where is that name.

It is, if you point it at someone's eye.

Retinal laser accidents: mechanisms and management
Martin A. Mainster
Department of Ophthalmology, University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, Kansas 66160-7379

(Received 8 March 1999; accepted 25 November 1999)

Retinal injuries from industrial or military lasers are uncommon, but laser accidents can injure the retina and destroy central vision, permanently. Key principles of retinal anatomy and psychophysics provide a basis for understanding laser-retinal interactions, retinal trauma, and treatment options. Immediate vision loss after a laser accident depends primarily on the location and extent of retinal damage and vitreoretinal hemorrhage. Prompt ophthalmic evaluation of accident victims is indicated to determine the nature and severity of injuries to the cornea, iris, crystalline lens, and retina. There are no clinically proven therapies for minimizing the acute effects of retinal laser injuries, but vitreoretinal surgery is useful for managing complications such as persistent vitreous hemorrhages, macular holes, and epiretinal membranes. The best way to manage laser trauma is to prevent it. ©2000 Laser Institute of America.
