One of the most notorious episodes of World War ll occurred when a one time famous football hero, as an American bomber pilot, did one of the most reprehensible acts a commanding officer can do under fire. His plane took some flak and he bailed out on his crew.

Strange that I never heard of this "notorious" (def:.Known widely and usually unfavorably) case.

A plane taking flak was over enemy territory. To "bail out" means to give up the chance of returning to your base and -- assuming you survive parachuting into all that flak (fired by anti-aircraft artillery) -- taking your chance of being treated decently by enemy ground forces and going to POW camp for the duration.

It's odd that the author doesn't provide a name.

Dude, fallout isn't as bad as people were left to believe. Look at the studies of the two Japanese explosions, as well as Chernobyl accident and aftermath, it wasn't as bad as people believe.

PS. What I do like about Firehat's piece is the fact that savages will only be defeated with savagery. As we learned in WWII, with this kind of enemy, you must show him awesome firepower and your willingness to make unbridled use of it before you have a chance to win. In this sense, I wholeheartedly agree that Bush, and even Israel to some extent, still don't get it.

He needs to be "slapped" in the head. This writer is spot-on in most of his criticism.

I am not naive. I realize my conception was most likely a celebration of sorts of our victory over the Japanese and a rebirth of the United States.
