It seems that a plane went down, probably not from ground fire. I got it by phone from the nearby village that the 2 pilots were dead on board. take the info with caution and wait for confirmation from trusted sources.
I could not stay long online because I am on dialup.

Drudge has the fuller explanation. IDF sent in a small ground force to neutralize a Hezbollah position. It completed its mission and returned. Fox News made this event sound rather odd when they first reported it. (Almost as if Israel had been repelled) This makes much more sense. Fox needed some military advising before they reported such an odd story.

That said, I'm curious about the mine thing too but have no expertise to offer.

Neither do I, but we probably should suspect that this is going to be one heck of an engagement. We now know that the Hezbullha has been doing nothing but preparing for this very day for years. My suggestion would be to land troops ahead on shore or paratroop to some defensible positions. The big advantage to Israel is that they control the air space. Any exposed Hezbullah asset will only have minutes.

Israeli troops cross Lebanese border to attack Hezbollah bases
July 17, 2006 - 7:44

JERUSALEM (AP) - Israeli ground troops have entered southern Lebanon to attack Hezbollah bases on the border, a government spokesman said Monday.

Until Monday, Israel's six-day-old offensive against Hezbollah following the capture of two Israeli soldiers had been an aerial campaign. The government spokesman, Asaf Shariv, said the Israeli army chief of staff confirmed that ground troops were also in Lebanon.

In Beirut, fighter bombers pummeled Lebanese infrastructure, setting harbours and fuel storage tanks ablaze, as Israel showed it would make the Lebanese government pay dearly for not curbing Hezbollah guerrillas.

You can't take out mines with air strikes. It takes ground troops and time. They have experimented with rockets (launched from the ground at the edge of the mine field) that string out small explosive charges that detonate mines by concussion but I do not believe that the system has been deployed yet.

Obvious propaganda. The media is treating this as if Israel were the aggressor, or somehow to blame. It's Israel versus Hamas and Hezbollah terrorists. Anyone who is anti-Israel is pro-terrorist, and therefore an enemy of the United States. We want to kill terrorists, not protect them from Israel.

GROUND OFFENSIVE DENIED!!

Ground Offensive Denied

Updated: 13:03, Monday July 17, 2006

Israel has denied reports its troops have launched a ground offensive in Lebanon against Hizbollah militants.

Wire reports initially said its soldiers were hunting out Hizbollah missile bases.

But it later went back on the account and also denied reports that an Israeli F16 jet had been shot down over Lebanon.

Meanwhile, Hizbollah missiles have again been falling on Haifa, in northern Israel.

Israel has already warned it will knock out Lebanon's electricity grid if the rocket attacks continue.

Israeli continued its bombardment of Lebanon overnight and this morning.

Three missiles hit the capital's southern suburbs while an attack on Beirut's port triggered a large fire.

Israel said it had launched 60 strikes from jets and artillery overnight. Attacks on Sunday destroyed two army posts on the northern Lebanese coast, killing nine Lebanese soldiers.

The raids also damaged the homes of Hizbollah officials in the east of the country, killing five people. The air strikes came after Hizbollah rocket attacks killed eight people in the Israeli city of Haifa on Sunday.

Hizbollah leader Spayed Hassan Nasrallah said the strike on Israel's third-biggest city was retaliatory and promised more "surprises".

Meanwhile, 40 Britons have been airlifted out of Beirut, the Foreign Office said. There are 10,000 Britons in the country.

Israel's military campaign in Lebanon was launched after Hizbollah captured two Israeli soldiers and killed eight others.

Over 160 Lebanese have been killed in the fighting, nearly all civilians. There have been around 24 Israeli casualties, including 12 civilians hit in rocket attacks.

Yes, MSM showed Lebanese *complaining* because "all they got were flyers" warning of an impending Israeli attack (from the Israelis to the civilians, mind you) - not "sirens"!

Sheesh - the reason Israelis get "sirens" in their country is to tell their residents about an "incoming" from the idjuts in the Leb's midst!

"When the Zionists behave like there are no rules and no red lines and no limits to the confrontation, it is our right to behave in the same way," Nasrallah said in a televised address, looking tired. He said Hezbollah had hit Haifa because of Israel's strikes on Lebanese civilians.

Unreal. There seems to be no limit to how blatantly these scum can lie.

Hamas and Hezbollah fighters are Pu$$ies! That is what I would be touting if I were in charge of the IDF. They are scared to meet armed men on a battlefield. Instead they attack women and children or hide behind their own women and children.

We should repeat this over and over and over to draw them out.

Oops... His formal name is Saed Hassan Nasrallah. Stupid typo - or on second thought, its appropriate in a funny sort of way. If all terrorists were spayed from birth onwards, the genocidal gene pool of mankind would eventually die out. BIRTH CONTROL FOR TERRORISTS! Maybe we can get Planned Parenthood to endorse family planning for Islamofascists.

" IDF went into Lebanon and returned due to extremely high concentration of mines. "

This is a stupid screw-up. They are supposed to send in an AC-130 with 20mm explosive rounds to clear the minefield. This is why accidents happen in the military.
