My bf uses Savon, which I believe is being bought out by CVS. I do keep up on threads like these, because I believe that I have to do my part in taking care of myself. My worry is that large pharmacies might be unable to conduct business for an extended period of time.

Lol, I guess if that happens, everyone who takes meds is SOL, eventually....

As I post on all these threads....keep some green cash money in the home. Resist the urge to spend it.

"Cash is king" - I learned that after the Northridge quake when the entire area was out of power for three or more days...the convenience store people at least had their abacus so we could, and did, buy a few things we were short on.

Something people overlook is mosquito protection.

If the windows are broken or you are having to hike out, have at least head protection against mosquito's.

In the future only buy LED flashlights.

Have large backpacks in case you have to load up your food and water and go elsewhere.

In my car I carry water, a little food, a cheap sleeping bag, an umbrella (I live in southern Cal. desert), and a backpack in case I have to abandon the car.

"One of the lessons of Katrina is never give up your guns. They can protect you and feed you. "

Are you also going to loot the Walmart and steal from your neighbors? Yours is the same mentality used by the inner city people who decided to stay behind in NO. Their idea of survival was to steal anything and everything from the surrounding homes and stores and shoot at emergency workers as well. You have no grasp of what really happens in a disaster. If you did, you wouldn't stay there.

What a remarkably insulting thing to say. Of course I am not going to loot the Walmart and steal from my neighbors. But I am certainly going to keep thugs from killing me, eating my horses (who are worth a good deal of money), or raping my daughter. That is the kind of thing that happened in New Orleans when people left their guns behind. It was a model of Great Britain or any other society that gives up its guns so that only the bad guys have them.

We are country people here. We know very well how to handle firearms and how to deal with life sans electricity, grocery stores, or the other amenities of civilized life. I have lived without any modern conveniences. We will make a decision about whether to leave or stay depending on the nature of the disaster, rather than making a blanket decision to leave or to stay. It's important to plan for a variety of contingencies, not just one (like a hurricane or nuclear blast in DC). Unlike you we do not live in Louisiana and do not have to worry much about hurricanes coming this far inland. In some cases, depending on where the problem is, evacuation may not even be possible; in others, evacuating may be the wise course. But I'll tell you this: I've learned the hard way that government cannot protect me from the bad guys. That's one reason I own guns.

In any case I'm not at all sure I understand where you're coming from, figuratively speaking. You live in Louisiana; did you evacuate for Katrina? Did you leave your costly guns behind for looters to pick up and use? Did you just rely on the government to protect you? Or are you just anti-gun?
