You were a big part of those threads, my friend.

And I keep them bookmarked because that is FR at its very best.

Thanks! You're right...

Also, from the live threads, here is about where the discussion on Blanco & Nagin's Saturday afternoon news conference began....

The conference where they decided not to have a mandatory evacuation, remember?

I see that you had a post here suggesting how they could have done it.

Maybe you would have liked to stay behind to help find them.

That's a very juvenile - not to mention, profoundly ignorant - comment.

There was supposedly already a plan in place that called for using city and school buses to evacuate those without transportation. The plan should have included contingencies for people to drive the buses, obviously.

It's also quite obvious that the plan wasn't followed.

The mayor said he would stick with the state’s evacuation plan and not officially call for residents to leave until 30 hours before expected landfall

My recollection - although I'm not going to take the time to find the link right now - is that he said he wasn't calling for a mandatory evacuation at that time because he didn't have the resources to get people out or places to put them if they left, although those things should have been, and apparently were, in the plan he didn't follow.

Also, common sense tells you that you have to call for an evacuation while there is still time for people to get out. 30 hours before landfall doesn't cut it.

The first mention of any strike area other than FL came at 10 am on Saturday morning, when a watch was issued. The watch area extended only as far as Morgan City; Texas was never mentioned.

Not true. We were discussing NOLA being a target Friday night on the Katrina threads.

A "watch" isn't issued until a storm is 36 hours away or less, but that doesn't mean they can't tell it's headed in your direction before that.

"People aren’t stupid. Evacuation is not a viable public safety model, and after one or two scares, the public will refuse to play any longer. The solution is not evacuation, but levees, drainage, and above all, coastal restoration."

Though most posters on these threads would rather display their ignorance, they wouild be well served to acknowledge this as the truth.

"That's because NOLA DIDN'T take the brunt of the storm."

Amen. You should see my neighborhood in Slidell.
