Dear Hillsdale Guy,

I don't have a clue.

I posted in this in part to see what the FReeper Research Department comes up with. ;-)

Dear dakine,

"'current Secretary of the Department of Disabilities'

"Now I know this state is too far gone..."

Sadly, it is our allegedly Republican governor who raised this department to Cabinet level:

"She got to know Robert Ehrlich when he was a congressman and she was a lobbyist for the National Federation of the Blind, based in Baltimore. 'Even then, he was a real champion for disabilities.'

"Ehrlich named Cox to head the Governor’s Office on Disabilities and then created a Cabinet-level department for disabilities, which the administration says is the first in the U.S."

We don't need Democrats to increase bureacracy and bloat in Maryland! LOL!

What kind of an image are politicians supposed to have in the mind of voters? Most politicians are no more respected than a used car salesman. Why would being blind "hurt" their image when politicians images already suck?

As far as how she is going to read bills--most politicians have staff members that work with them. Her staff members will be read the bills to her. Is that so hard?

What does being blind have to do with dealing with disasters? The Katrina disasters were all handled by people who could see. What good did their eye balls do them? They still screwed up royally.

Do you have a problem with people with disabilities in general, or is it just blind people. I'm curious about this.

So you think he is nominating her for PC reasons, and not because she might be qualified to do the job? Do you think a blind person is capable of being an effective Lt. Governor? No?

"Somebody please explain to me why this makes sense."

All you have to do is watch the news every night to see how stupid politicians are. Most of them have two eyeballs--and yet they still are incompetent. Seems to me that if a person has a brain and can communicate effectively, then they pretty much qualifies them to run for office.

She's been politically active for years (for someone who is only 36) and the Governor has known her since he was in Congress. As far as being able to perform the duties of a Lt Governor..... well, she's a heck of a lot less "disabled" than many people in sternuous occupations....Max Cleland and Steven Hawking come to mind.

She is apparently a Mormon, fwiw.

http://www.examiner.com/a-134098~An_inside_look_at_Kristen_Cox___Ehrlich_s_advocate_for_the_disabled.html

Annapolis - Kristen Cox greets a visitor with a firm handshake and a strong gaze, and only the long, thin cane hints at the fact that she is almost totally blind.

“It’s an inconvenience that you work around,” Cox told The Examiner.

Her blindness “started when I was about 11,” growing up in Utah, due to a rare recessive trait, said Cox, who is now 36.

“I had to memorize everything” when she went through Brigham Young University, Cox said, because she didn’t know Braille. “If you’re born blind you tend to get those skills early on.” Despite her disability, she served a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Brazil.

She finally learned Braille because “I wanted to read to my son,” she said.

She got to know Robert Ehrlich when he was a congressman and she was a lobbyist for the National Federation of the Blind, based in Baltimore. “Even then, he was a real champion for disabilities.”

Ehrlich named Cox to head the Governor’s Office on Disabilities and then created a Cabinet-level department for disabilities, which the administration says is the first in the U.S.

The department is small — about 25 people — and helps coordinate and evaluate the programs throughout the rest of the government. “We spend about $4 billion on people with disabilities” in Maryland, Cox said. “We can be very objective about services. … We don’t have anything to lose.”

Being an advocate for the people with disabilities comes naturally to Cox: “If you have a disability, you’re always an advocate for yourself,” she said.

I totally agree with you. I voted for him because I don't vote for democrats, and because it was KKT running against him. He has shown himself to be a RINO lately. Firing Smith was just plain stupid, and the way he defended it was right next door to nasty and desperate. This move is very transparent to attract the sympathy vote. Ain't happening. I won't vote for O'Malley, but I cannot cast a vote for Bob. At least that is the way I feel right now.

The only thing that tries my patience is when I have to deal with posters who believe they are more intelligent than reality is bearing out for them.

Why do you think FDR kept his disability a secret?

Dear dmw,

My comments reflect nothing at all on Ms. Cox. I've never heard of her before.

That's part of the problem. I knew Mike Steele before he was nominated. He'd been around Maryland Republican politics for a while, and even someone like me, pretty far out on the periphery of involvement, had met him, and liked him a lot.

My comments reflect solely on Mr. Ehrlich.

She sounds like a wonderful person.

Do you believe this is a strong political move?

Given that US census figures show that 20% of Marylanders are considered "disabled" (physically or mentally)... this is not a lightweight number of constituents. I look forward to hearing more from and about Ms Cox.

Isn't it ironic that her selection is being criticized by someone whose FR name is "vision"?

You have to have a sense of humor to study politics.

Why do you think FDR kept his disability a secret?

The two senators I mentioned both served during FDR's time in office and neither kept their blindness a secret. So maybe paralysis was taboo, but blindness wasn't.

Since then, we've elected Senators, such as Bob Dole (severe nerve damage in both arms) and Max Cleland (triple amputee in a wheelchair) with their disabilities well-known. Times change.

It remains to be seen how she presents herself now that she will be thrust in front of the media. But Ehrlich was "spot on" in his choice of the last Lt Governor. I doubt very much that this lady is a KKT.

Because of biased and prejudiced people like you not being able to look at them for who they are, instead, only focusing on their disability. I'm far more intelligent than your narrow minded, biased comments you posted.

By the way, if it is too "trying" for your patience to deal with me, then don't. But don't expect to post ridiculous comments like yours and think you aren't to be challenged on them.
